Genealogy Chat

Hi everyone, I've had plenty of success tracing ancestors but have hit a brick wall with both of the things my 80 yr old mum wanted me to find out for her when I started this. One, where is her grandfather buried who died in hospital in 1906 - no idea where to start looking. Two, what happened to her aunty who was widowed in WW1 then remarried in 1925. I've found the marriage entry but can anyone tell me how to go about finding where she went or where her children are?

Thanks, I've got granpa's death cert and know the likely area but burials on freereg don't cover that time and I don't know where else to look. I've tried googling with no luck but the local council sounds like a good idea, thanks.
As for aunty looking for deaths now I know her new name is a good idea.What about her children? They could still be alive is there a way of finding them?

Maiden name Florence M Waters (no date of birth though)
married Horace Webber 1917 Kingsclere, Hampshire when he was on leave.
Child, Florence M Webber born 1918 Taunton Somerset
Horace died Mar 1918
Florence remarried Hugh P Gamblin Jun 1925 Taunton Som 5c 547
William A born 1925
Gwendoline A born 1927 both in Taunton.

Hilary - had a look on ancestry, and have found an Ethel Gamble born 1934 in Redruth, mother's name Webber. May be a mis-transcription, worth a look maybe.

i feel awful and owe you both a big apology, I've re read the messages we've been posting and realised that right at the beginning when I first told you Florence's name I typed Florence M Webber. That is actually her daughter she was Florence L Webber which makes everything you've done for me a waste of your time. I can't apologise enough I know how frustrating wrong info is.

That's right and I know he died in 1918 in the war. After that she seems to just disappear.

I'm reaching the stage where I'm not sure of anything! I don't know how somerset girl is getting her head round it all!
I'm certain of these facts;
Florence L Waters married Horace Webber in Kingsclere Jun 1917
a child was born in Taunton Somerset (where Horace's family lived) called Florence M M Webber (mother Waters) in sept 1917 I am assuming she is Florence's which may be a mistake.Apart from that nothing is definite.

i have a photo of Florence and Horace's wedding with the date and place on and on freebmd it is in the index of marriages. Little Florence is a bit of guesswork I must admit based on her mothers maiden name of Waters and the fact that horace came from somerset.

good idea, I'll order it straight away. Horace is my great uncle and my mum who is 80 has always wanted to know what happened to her but no one in the family knew anything by the time she was old enough to think about asking.It seems really strange that she should just totally disappear, I'm beginning to wonder if she emigrated or something.

She seems to have married Horace while he was on leave from france (it says that on the back of the photo as well) Judging by the dates of the baby's birth it was a hasty marriage and I'm guessing that after they got married he went back to France and she travelled to somerset to live with his parents like a good little wife. Some of his family were at the wedding so travel arrangements can't have been too difficult even for hard up farm workers which is what they were.

No, no addresses at all.At the 1901 census when horace was 10 his parents were living at Brompton Green, Brompton ralph but whether they stayed there or not I've no idea.

Well that's something. wish they'd release later census returns. privacy is a pain when you're trying to find people.

I don't have the cert only the info written on the back of the photo and the freebmd index. she might easily have been born in hampshire because they got married in a place called Woodhay at ten in the morning while he was on leave from france. At first i wondered if she had travelled to where he had landed in Portsmouth but it isn't really that close so i guess it's where she came from.

That's a possiblity. She should be on the 1901 census shouldn't she and if I've got her father's name as well i might be able to trace the family through hot matches although I've already got her on my tree and there haven't been any for her.

just seen your add on, i think he was home on leave from france, whether he was stationed there at any time I've no idea I've got his medal card but there's no service record.

What sort of institution is one of them in? If she's an inmate inan asylum that could rule her out too.

Typical! How come these poor Victorian labourers galloped all round the country? I've tracked quite a few down in Wales - young men mostly who moved there to work in the coal mines but it makes life hard for us.

Just looked at her dates again. Do you think she could be the one that somerset girl found in 1911 the birth dates match.
