Not much help but she's probably mistranscribed. Try looking just for forename and yob. You might have to wade through several pages of Margarets but it might be the only way to spot her. (It's so much easier when their surnames are near the beginning of the alphabet!).

If you know she had siblings it might be worth searching on those forenames - especially if one of them is unusual.

Looks good Selena - I have a Gospot/Alverstoke bunch who seem to be interchangeable place-wise.

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Mar 2009 21:20

could this be the reason why they can't be found on the 1841 census??

Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Female

George was born in Lancashire in 1847

It looks as though John was in the Navy or possibly Marines and was serving elsewhere ..... either Ireland or East Indies

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Mar 2009 21:22

Sarah is a widow on the 1851 Census

but as George was born in 1847 in Rochdale, maybe John died in Lancashire, or in the UK?

I don't think that is correct

There are 3 + 1 Major Schofields born ca 1842 on the 1861 Census

James Major Schofield, John, Rachael abt 1844 Rochdale, Lancashire, England Son Spotland, Lancashire

Major Schofield abt 1842 Ireland Canterbury St Mary Northgate, Kent

Major Schofield, Edmund, Mary abt 1846 Rochdale, Lancashire, England Son Spotland, Lancashire

Major Schofield, James, Martha abt 1839 Rochdale, Lancashire, England Son Wardleworth, Lancashire

The 1851 Census I found said that Major was born in Ireland ........ this one was on the 1861 Census

I wonder if he joined the same forces as his father??????

Is this one of Sylvia's Majors?

How about this marriage from the IGI--

SARAH KNIGHT
Marriage: 20 JUN 1830 St Mary'S Church, Oldham, Lancashire, England

Or even this one -
SARAH HEALEY
Marriage: 02 MAR 1830 St Chad'S Church, Rochdale, Lancashire, England

It's not too far from Rochdale.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 11 Mar 2009 09:16

here's a couple more of interest from the IGI -
ALICE STOTT
Marriage: 17 FEB 1830 St Chad'S Church, Rochdale, Lancashire, England

SARAH CROSSLEY
