Hi every one,
Please confirm.Am i right in thinking there are no passenger lists for Ireland to England 1850-c1860?

Yes Catherine you are correct...if you are trying to work out the when and where of your family going to UK from the Island of Ireland then its a case of looking at the earliest Census where they appear and seeing if any children were born prior to their arrival and trying that way ...its not an exact science and full of pitfalls but its the best there is I'm afraid

mgnv Report 18 Feb 2009 21:38

Erin - basically correct, except they're not really going to the UK - they were there to start with - what do you think was United with what in UK?

Blue1 Report 19 Feb 2009 10:42

thanks both of you,
It's a pain! I have no children born in Ireland, and they married here 1865 .
Suppose i'll have to add a trip to Cork to my list. But i have got copies of Census,i'll have a read back through them in case i missed something,i should have the 1861 so i'll just see if i can find it

Blue1

Blue1 Report 19 Feb 2009 10:55

You probably won't see this,
but i can't believe i didn't get the 1861.So am off to find them both before they married, and even more annoyingly they just say born Ireland on the others.

Morning ErinGoBragh1916,
Sorry about the delay, been trying to find Ellen!.
Well Her name in my cousins family history, which her mother wrote years ago,was Ellen Calnan, she was born apparently nr Bantry Bay,in about 1844.
She moved to London 1860 and went into service, she married John Harrington also from Cork
She was illiterate (so gawd knows how it's actually spelt)
this is the only marriage that seems to match them

Marriages Sep 1865
Calnin Ellen Holborn 1b 944
Harrington John Holborn 1b 944

I think this is going to be one of those needles in a hay stack.
but thanks for any thing you can find out for me.I's bound to be more than i have, which is next to nothing

Hello Cathie...What delay !!!!...

I think your right regarding the Surname..likely it will be Callaghan or variations on the theme....Will give it a go and see if any needles pop out of the haystack..oddly enough I was looking for Harrington from the same area (Holborn) some while ago the person was after finding a "boy" who was sent to Canada under the "orphans" sceme....Jeremiah Harrington.

Eringobragh1916 Report 19 Feb 2009 18:42

Cathie...I have found a number of Calnan /Calnane families in the Inchigeelagh area of Co.Cork along with Harringtons...so maybe the Surname for Ellen was correct....Have you any idea roughly how old john was...?

Blue1

Blue1 Report 19 Feb 2009 18:53

yes,
on my tree it gives his year of birth as c1844

Blue1 Report 19 Feb 2009 18:54

I'll just see if i ca find a census for them,it should give his approx age

Blue1

Blue1 Report 19 Feb 2009 18:56

On the 1891 his age is 49,but i think they rounded it up somehow
Cathie
so i think that makes 1842

Morning,
thanks for all this.I think i will have to get the cert as you suggest.
Isn't it annoying that on the census they never said where in Ireland! would have made life so much easier.
The names for John and Ellen's children all born c1871-1883 were John, Denis, Daniel, Desmond ,and Ann,and i notice there is a Daniel on the list.
On my other family members from this era, they seemed to name children after family members.
