I have a friend who has a subscription to Ancestry, and luckily 3 pages of his war record survived the Blitz and they were his medical report. This showed his age (although I did know this as I had the GRO ref of his birth) when and where he signed up, his previous occupation and when he had his innoculations, and any time he had off and any time in hospital.
Couple all this up with all the info that I had been gathering from marriage certs and the census info on his family I have been given in this thread by the lovely peeps on here then I have managed to get pretty detailed series of events

I want to thank everyone who has helped with tracing this record and I have now managed to get a good idea on what happened. Luckily managed to find a few pages (3) of his WW1 record online. They were a bit scorched but it was his medical report but it gave me the info to patch a few things together

born in 1894 youngest of 11 kids most likely his mum died in childbirth as her death is recorded in the same quarter. by the time he is 7 he is living with his mums borther and wife who is a miner. joins the army in 1915 at wakefield, occupation listed as an onsetter which I found out is someone that loads up coal to take it to the surface. joins the Kings Royal Rifles who's HQ in in Wantage, Oxfordshire so thats what brings him to this part of the country. at the time of his marriage he is listed on his medical report as being in hospital undergoing innoculation and tests and he is listed on his marriage certificate as living in Banbury as a lodger. My thoughts is that he was undgoing the tests and innoculations in the Banbury Horton Hospital (or whatever is was called then) and the local familes were probably taking on soldiers as lodgers while they were here and this is how he meets his wife to be. what is really interesting is that on his medical report that he has slight vision problems and it even lists his glasses prescription. he was granted 2 leave requests between 1916 and 1918 and he was also in chelsea hospital for a shrapnel wound before being sent back out again and dying on the 21st March 1918

No marriage for Jesiah found on Find My Past or Free BMD, but found on IGI, Jesse Leam married Harriet Wright, 1 Nov 1838 at Duffield, his father Thomas Leam.

samuel bowler married mary louisa mirfin in 1901

just noticed annie died the same quarter as lawrence was born and the other children were still with their father and his new wife. maybe annie died in childbirth and lawrence was the only one sent away to his aunt and uncle.

A Samuel married Dec. 1894 or Dec. 1901, Chesterfield. (Probably can't be Dec. 1901 because he was already married on the census.)

found a death for annie bowler in chesterfield on FreeBMD died jan-feb-march 1894 that would make sense to why he was living with his aunt and uncle. i wonder what happened to the other children listed on 1891 if they were shared out amongst family members

thanks for all the info, i don't have access to the census but bang goes my theory of them being a military family. now i need to work out why he was living with his aunt and uncle as his father samuel is listed as still being alive when he got married in 1916. maybe his mum died and he was left with family while his dad looked for work as has happened in another branch of my family and more curious how did he end up in oxfordshire. I have found them on the 1881 census

Looking at the census they appear to be miners, moving around for work I expect.

Do you have access to the census? He is still with the LEAM family in 1911. The same family as in the 1901 census

You'll get no info from the d.cert that isn't on the CWGC site, less most likely, except that you may learn he "died of wounds" rather than being "killed in action".

Given the source, as you might expect, this register is limited to soldiers with pob=SCT, or who enlisted in SCT.

Would you care to post the name, Kerin? Perhaps we could find him on the 1901 census. (As long as he's not a John Smith!) Is any more info given on the CWGC site?
