MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 17:07

Deaths Dec 1883
Hilliard Cornelius John 52 Brighton 2b 146

Deaths Jun 1886
Hilliard Eleanor Ann 57 Brighton 2b 129

So two of the adults who would presumably have known Jessie's father's name died well before she was married.

I think Eliza was a widow in 1881, working as a monthly nurse in Kingston on Thames. There are various possible deaths for William, but there isn't one that really stands out. I can't find him on the 1881 census.

Eliza's death is probably the one I posted earlier:

Deaths Mar 1886
CHAMBERS Elizabeth 54 Brighton 2b 19

I still can't find Jessie in 1891 - can anyone see her?

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 31 Oct 2008 16:01

Just had a look at the marriage cert - it looks like "Name unknown - daughter an orphan". If both her parents died when she was very young and no one knew or remembered her father's name then I suppose that's a possibility ... ?

Don't take anything for granted - this is only a theory at the moment, although it looks quite promising.

Thank you so much will take notes and study for awhile, so much info to check and will order birth certificate for future ref Karon

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 15:22

By the way, if you can't work out where I've found something, just yell, and I'll explain it.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 15:19

You could check the electoral roll at the Brighton library - unfortunately Eliza won't be listed, though, because women didn't have the vote in those days.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 15:15

I shall have to go and do some work now - you might try looking for William and Eliza Chambers in 1881 and 1891, Jessie in 1891, and Cornelius Hilliard before his marriage, to see if Eliza is actually his sister. I'll look in again later.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 15:14

To be Cornelius's niece, Jessie would have to be the daughter of his sister or his wife's sister, which why I was looking for a Manners-Chambers or Manners-Hilliard marriage. I didn't find a Manners-Chambers marriage in the right sort of area at the right sort of time.

Mary your amazing, so much info just don't know what to say Karon

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 15:11

Possible deaths for Eliza and William (although the ages don't exactly match the ones given on the census), which would make Jessie an orphan before she married.

Deaths Jun 1886
Chambers William 45 Brighton 2b 134

Deaths Mar 1886
CHAMBERS Elizabeth 54 Brighton 2b 191

However, that doesn't explain why the father's name would be given as "unknown" on the marriage cert.

Hi Mary could Mrs manner have had another daughter [Jessie mother] and died in birth that's why she was left with them and Jessie father left household. would it be possible to do check on address in 1874ish [elector list]. Sorry my computer knowledge very little as only started learning couple moths ago and getting on a bit in life ha ha Karon

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 15:01

Ah, maybe we're getting somewhere.

Marriages Sep 1853
>> CHAMBERS William Brighton 2b 334
>> HILLAIRD Eliza Brighton 2b 334
Jackson Joseph Henry Brighton 2b 334
STORAR Sarah Brighton 2b 334

And in 1871, William and Eliza are living in Reigate, where Jessie Emma was born.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 14:56

Well, Eleanor certainly got around a bit.

Marriages Jun 1866
>> BLUNT Eleanor A Brighton 2b 405
BOTTING Thomas F Brighton 2b 405
>> Martin Charles Brighton 2b 405
Wells Mary A Brighton 2b 405

So she was born Eleanor Ann Manners, and married:
1. William Blunt
2. Charles Martin
3. Cornelius Hilliard.

Now looking for a Manners-Chambers or Hilliard-Chambers marriage.

Marriages Dec 1869

MARTIN Eleanor Ann Brighton 2b 339

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 14:45

In 1901 she gives her birthplace as Brighton.

I can't find an exactly matching birth, but I think this is a good possibility:

Births Dec 1873
Chambers Jessie Emma Reigate 2a 153

In 1881, Jessie Emma Chambers is living in Brighton with her uncle Cornelius John Hilliard and his wife Eleanor Ann, and various children and grandchildren of theirs. Eleanor has a son called Blount and her mother is called Manners, so I'm just trying to work out the relationships.

thanks all . Mary cant find her on 1881 .1891 but only on 1901 with husband and son,. have you any idea how i would prove and get birth certificate properly not possible? Karon

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 14:07

As she married at 19 in 1892, she should have been born around 1873. Have you found her on the 1881 or 1891 censuses?

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 31 Oct 2008 14:05

Goodness, that's hard to read.

Might be "daughter - orphan", but that doesn't make much sense, and I've never seen it on a cert before.

I'm not even 100% sure that the first word's "daughter" - the first letter might be a capital D, but there isn't another one on the cert to compare it with.
