Here's the location stuff for Jim's 1901 census

1901 England Census
Name: Thos Bagnall Read
...
Civil Parish: Wood Green
Ecclesiastical parish: St Michael
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
Street address: 4 Parside Villas
Registration district: Edmonton
Sub registration district: Tottenham
ED, institution, or vessel: 66
Household schedule number: 94
...
Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 1256; Folio: 81; Page: 13.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Here's a transcription of the Enumerators page for ED 66 (1901) [omitting the top matter]:

Boundary of the ED
North by Parish Boundary of Southgate. East by the Middle of Wolves Lane. South by the Middle of
White Hart Lane. West by the Middle of Soutjgate Road "Called Green Lanes".

[The modern Haringey-Barnet boundary runs between and parallel to Lyndhurst Rd and Berkshire Gdns around here.
I presume the old parish boundary was the same.
This also solves Sue's problem - I presume Southgate Rd was an intermediate form before Green Lanes became the High Road around here.]

Contents of ED
Sothgate Road "Green Lanes" East Side from Southgate Parish Boundary to White Hart Lane including
Lyndhurst Road, Maryland Road, Arcadian Gardens, Sylvan Road "or Villas", Woodside Road,
Eastham Grove, Canning Cresent, Newnham Road and Kings Road, White Hart Lane "North Side"
from Sothgate Road to Wolves Lane.

Hi Dutch,

I have been following this thread with great interest as I come from Wood Green. I was trying to fathom out where Southgate Road was as I don't remember there being one in Wood Green. Having followed the census pages highlighted by Jim, there is reference to Maryland Road, and I think Arcadian Villas, which is now Arcadian Gardens ( one of my best friends lived there in the 1960's). I would think, although I'm obviously not sure, that Parkside Villas would have been roughly where Woodside Road is now. This is next to Woodside Park, a big park where I spent a lot of my childhood!

It's short for esquire - it's a sort of honorific that guys add after their name to give them a bit of class. Mr is a more common one.

dutch

dutch Report 18 Oct 2008 15:55

it could be as the headstone behind his parents is white with cross on and emblem of his regtment with his name and number on,ive ask someone on on photo exchange if they could take photo of the grave in 1900,could i ask what does ESQ mean after his name, and thank you all for your help

Thelma

Thelma Report 18 Oct 2008 15:51

Obviously he is only in one grave.
He seems to be mentioned on two headstones/memorials.

mgnv

mgnv Report 18 Oct 2008 15:49

My guess is he's buried there (i.e., with his folks), and there's also a war memorial in the cemetery commemorating all the war dead buried there, and he's named on both that and his grave marker.

dutch

dutch Report 18 Oct 2008 15:48

Southgate Road is in the north of London, in an area called Cannonbury, near Shoreditch. It's quite an old area of London but doubt the actual buidling still exists, as a result of re-development
