After the utter & complete luxury of ordering certificates from 'Scotlandspeople' [In my view the best system ever]. now after a year or more I need to order a few [death] certificates from the England G.R.O....[the worst system ever]...my blood pressure has exploded trying to 'just' type in my details.

I have put in my email address as done in the past...even asked for a new password....in fact several new passwords that I keep emailing the site to send me...'none' seem to work...at all.

Please help...what am I doing wrong....This is just reminding me of why I loathed sending of for English certs in the past.

Thanks in Advance ~ Steve.

I've never had a problem with GRO

I have never had a password

Why do you need one??

I go to www.gro.gov.uk,

click on Ordering Certificates Online,

and then just follow instructions.

It's been as easy as pie ............ and I'm ordering from Canada!!

when you log into the GRO site you have to put in your password to proceed. I find these dont work if you just type it in BUT if you copy and paste the password from the email they send you with the new password ,this works. Why they decided the site needs passwords I dont know as it doenst seem to serve any purpose!
OR maybe the password links with your registration and so thats how your name & address comes up on one of the order pages, could be!!

Nope :-(

Sylvie the site ~ sends me to 'type' in 'email address' and then 'password'...definitely states 'error' when no password is entered and will not progress any further - 'zip'...but when I type in the passwords they send on to me containing 8 characters which they stress should only be of 5 to be acceptable [yet still send to me] ...still no success - what a site.

It went well till I get to the dd/mm/yy part 'error' - all I know is the years of death....this is the point of getting certs...help ~ it wont accept until bar this one minor detail is rectified. What do I write???

Now it is sending me to other parts of the sites with $$$ signs for more information needed. Sigh ~ I still think this is the worst site ever....'Scotlandspeople'...I bow down to you.

Is the event in the last 50 years? I have heard some say you need the date for that.

Are you putting in that you know the reference number?

Ask someone if they can look up the GRO ref no for you. I'm sure some nice person will look on the indexes on ancestry for you.

P.S. Scotlands people is great unless you want an event in the last 100 years.

I think I have been so caught up in this it is hard for me to think straight...thank you all for your patience.

I have the details - district - volume - page - etc....the G.R.O. filling in says it is in error unless I fill in the correct details for th dd/mm/yy....the death is for 1929...am I in the wrong part of the site???

Steve, if as Janet says it is within the last 50 years you will need to enter a date, otherwise, just enter the details found on the BMD index after clicking "YES" on is GRO ref known? and no more.

You may be trying to put too much information in, very little is actually required.

EDIT just seen your last post, date of death is NOT required after clicking yes for is GRO ref known.

If you would like to put the details, i will try and place an order for the cert as a test.

Hi All :-)

Looks as the orders finally went through OK. Thank you for all your extreme patience - help & suggestions.

In my humble opinion the site needs to be more user friendly...if adding more details for each selection voids the order why in the world have it...yep the less detail option worked a treat....sadly my headache isn't a treat at all...will go and curl up after all this ~ Hopefully my orders turn out to be correct...or that sinking feeling will return.

Cheers ~ the usually happy [sometimes whingy] - Steve :-)

Steve it only asks for more details than just the GRO ref if you dont tick the yes box that you have the GRO ref, Its easy to miss that box.

Hi Steve

I must admit it is about 6 months since I last ordered a certificate ........ we've been away so much that I didn't want certificates sent while we were absent.

I just tried to get into GRO.

I did have to enter my email address ..... and then had to find out which password I had registered. That took two tries (good job I keep a record!!).

Then I got in with no problems.

The password I use is one that I myself registered 3 or 4 years ago.

Why not try to change the password GRO has given you for one of your own design???

There is a facility for doing that.

I've had no problem ordering certs from England but with Scotlands people i had to pay £6 to get credits which i didn't need as i already had the cert number info already then pay another £10 for the cert and i have been waiting for 5 weeks now and it still hasn't arrived, at least the English ones are a lot quicker to come.
