Had several pms from David

1. You're working very hard on this Sylvia; thank you. All the info you are coming up with represents the best I have been avble to find so far

David Shadbolt = Sarah Biddey is the right couple but I don't see them anywhere as a couple in 1851 census. Do you?

Yes, Samuel the pot boy in Hampstead 1861 is the closet I've ever got to someone who might be him. But I cannot be sure because it does not say birthplace Shoredith and it should.

The later census confusions about Hertford / Hampshire and Islington are down to the enumerator in my view. Slight problem with geography it seems!

We do know from the Shadbolt Society that the David Shadbolt connection is to Datchworth and Tewin Shadbolts in Hertfordshire, by the way.

2. Yes, I've seen this one but our man is supposed to come from Shoreditch

3. Yes, that's William in 1861 in my view.

4. This one is a puzzle. She is never ever called Elizabeth - only Eliza. I've done Elizabeth / Eliz'bth/ Betsy / Lizzie and so on.

What I thought here is that it is a strong fit and the name chnge is because the Head of Household or someone in the household told the enumnerator that her name was Elizabeth. They might have done this out of ignorance of her true name or as is so often the case in Victorian England, her employer decided she should be known as Elizabeth because it suited them.

If the following is correct, then the reason you can't find David and Sarah Shadbolt on the 1851 Census is because she had married William Giddings in 1850!!

Marriages Jun 1850 (>99%)

>>>>Giddings William Hitchin 6 787
>>>>Shadbolt Sarah Hitchin 6 787

I think you need to buy this marriage certifcate from www.gro.gov.uk to see whether Sarah is actually Sarah Shadbolt nee Biddey, and what she says her status is.

Many thanks everyone.

So far what you've done is confirm that I have been looking in all the right places.

Somehow or other this family has been split up in my view just before the 1851 Census. Perhaps David Shadbolt has "gone away" for some reason? And that's why we can't find the family as a unit.

Perhaps the reasons why the Census references to young William and Samuel show 'wrong' birthplaces are because they were too young to know where they came from after a split with their parents? or, the family wanted to hide the Shoreditch connection for a particular reason?

Sylvia, I take your point about Sarah and I will check out that William Giddings marriage. Interesting to note I have never found a death reference for David around that time so maybe there was another reason.

Very grateful to you all for your help.

David
