One of my sets of gt grandparents were married in the Registry Office in Otley in 1840. |

They would still appear on the GRO indexes even if they did marry in a registry office. Civil Marriages came into being in 1837. |

Does anyone know when register offices came into being? I'm having trouble finding marriages in the late 1880s and can only conclude they did not marry in church. |
