Civil Marriages outside the church

Does anyone know when register offices came into being? I'm having trouble finding marriages in the late 1880s and can only conclude they did not marry in church.

They would still appear on the GRO indexes even if they did marry in a registry office. Civil Marriages came into being in 1837.

One of my sets of gt grandparents were married in the Registry Office in Otley in 1840.

Whose marriage(s) are you trying to find?
All marriages should be notified to the GRO, wherever they took place

Hi Reggie,
Yes, I've found them on the GRO, but it's all the details I was hoping for in the parish registers - name of fathers, where they were living at the time of marriage, and occupations.
I'm looking up the Fawcetts - in Halifax, trouble is there are quite a few Johns, Stephens, Arthurs etc., , and I need the fathers' names to make sure I have the right one.
