Right!
So Samuel is actually your 2x great grandfather!

That's better.

So let's get this straight.
Samuel Austin was born about 1830. You won't get a certificate for his birth because registration didn't start until 1837. I presume you worked out his birth year from censuses. These may be inaccurate.
Can you tell us all you know about Samuel and where he lived? Someone may be able to find him in parish registers.

Linda Report 2 May 2008 17:36

i have cert's of my mother father he was ernest herbert Austin born in plymouth 13.march 1897. then i traced and ordered his father's birth cert and he was sidney herbert Austin born 1873 And on his marriage cert it gave me his fathers name as samuel Austin (deceased) i thought thats how i was suppose to do it.linda

I'm afraid I'm with Reggie on this one.

This is all too circumstantial and the names too common for you to make the assumptions you have done.

Your dates don't fit.

Your first posting said

these are who i am looking for;john Austin birth abt:1767. and his wife:abt 1770. i know they had children, in 1851 census.there names were jonah austin 28. samuel austin 21 and emily austin who was 10.in these census john 69 and his wife was 63.

If John had been 69 in 1851 he was born in 1782 NOT in 1767. If his wife had been born in 1770 then she was 60 years old when Samuel was born and she'd have been in her 70s when his sister Emily was born!!!!!

Now I don't know how old you are but I'm in my mid 50s and my grandparents were born around 1900. My great grandparents were all born in the 1860s. Like Reggie I seriously doubt that your grandparents were born as early as the 1830s.

I suggest you start from scratch and get definite proof for each stage. You cannot assume that people (even with the right names) are yours.

I was in contact once with a person who had an ancestor in her tree with the right name (not a common one), right age and right place of birth. It matched one of my ancestral aunts even down to having a daughter of the right name. BUT we later discovered that there were two unrelated women with the same name and year of birth living within streets of each other in the same city. My contact wasn't my cousin as we had first thought.

You need certificates to prove the more recent generations.

How have you reached the conclusion that these people are your ancestors?

Have you started with yourself and followed the trail back through the generations?

I still can't agree with the idea that your grandfather was born in 1830.................

Linda

Linda Report 2 May 2008 14:23

Samuel age in the 1881 census was fifty one years. and harriet was thirty four years.

Linda

Linda Report 2 May 2008 14:20

Samuel's wife was called harriet this was in 1881 census: Samuel Austin birth abt 1830
Harriet Austin birth abt 1847
children were:sydney herbert Austin 1873
j.scott Austin 1876 Alfred Austin 1877 and Charles
Austin and harriet was widow in 1891 census.
all born in plymouth devon except harriet don't knoe where she was born to be honest. linda

ErikaH Report 2 May 2008 10:23

You need to start at the 'end'..........and work backwards...........

Who was Samuel's wife? What were the names of his children.

Forgive me, but I doubt very much that your grandfather was Samuel born 1830...........the maths just doesn't work!!!!

Linda

Linda Report 2 May 2008 00:07

Thank you Reggie and Sue in Somerset for all the help you have given me, i will now try and find their births and marriage details then i can send for cert's to confirm wether or not they are in my tree.
thankyou sooo much linda

Linda

Linda Report 1 May 2008 23:53

The only reason i have for thinking they stayed in englamd is because my grandfather did and was samuel born 1830 in plymouth, then he married and had his family there, so really i have no other proof than that to be honest reggie.
