Back on topic;

Another thibg that might point to Mary Jane being born in Cornwall, lots of the Cornish tin mining families moved north to work in the coalmines, lots of the images i checked had coal mining families listed.

Fruit bat

There is a way to check the description for a district on Ancestry.

Ferry Hill has three districts (13, 14 and 15). Each district description names the roads within the district, i simply checked each one till Well Hole was found, this told me which district. Then comes the hard bit..........

You have to check the district page by page till you find the road/street/building needed. In this case it was image 25 of 27.

A handy screenshot visual guide is on the wiki of the FTF site;

The main census page is at;
http://www.familytreeforum.com/wiki/index.php/Census_Search

Finding the images from a parish (as i did above) at;
http://www.familytreeforum.com/wiki/index.php/Finding_images_from_a_particular_parish

There are a few other guides that can be useful too and if you can "Find Martha" let me know, even using all the tricks i put in the articles she is still missing in 1871.

Sue in Somerset Report 5 May 2008 19:49

I wonder if the middle name of Sargeant might be a help?

I'd guess that might be the maiden name of a grandmother.

Well Hole Cottage is district 15 in the 1871.

A brewery and farming estate. Most households were farmers, some had fairly large areas of land and employed servants and farmhands.

Looks like the Robinsons ages could be out in the 1881, 1871 shows them nearby to Well Hole and William is a platelayer on the railways.

Orphan children; could be that Mary died or simply moved away and left the child with the Robinson family. I have a few like that in my tree, the mother marries and her illegitimate kids aren't accepted by the new hubby, she therefore has to leave them with family or friends.

You can rule out the married ones (as he took his mother's name) and the children younger than 13/ 14.

of the rest- do any bells ring?
What are Hannah and William Robinson? Why did they take in an orphan? Are they relatives or neighbours of his mother?
The man names on his marriage cert is possibly his grandfather. (it was shameful to be ilegitimate) or possibly made up but do any of the Mary Janes above have a father John who is a groom?

needles and haystacks!

Ferryhill is in Durham England.
Can trace William on census but not Mary.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 27 Apr 2008 14:25

The name of the person born 1874 would be useful.

Have you managed to trace them on any census?

Where is Ferryhill? Durham?
