Thank you Linda re the reference for Florence's birth certificate. I will be in England in July and hope to retrace 'footsteps' of the family. I will also try to order certificates as I find them so that information is very good.

Carole,

Do you know roughly where and when James died?

Rose, I am working on an absolute outside chance. The marriage cert you sent re John Hassall had parents Henry Hassall and Clara Bennett. I put those names into my tree as parents of James and had quite a few matches. I am wondering if you or someone who has access to census records could look for me to see if in the 1901 census there is a Henry Hassall who had a son James???
If we keep plugging away we will come up with something eventually.
Thanks, Carole

Thank you Rose, you are wonderful.
What does "Poole 5a 229" mean, sorry about my ignorance.
I'm going offline now, will check back in later.

Poole is the registration district, 5a is the volume and 229 is the page. You use these when you order a certificate.

Don't see anything on the passenger lists for James and Florence. Did your mother have any siblings?

Hi Rose,
Thanks for confirming re Poole.

I too have looked at passenger lists and haven't found anything. James & Florence went back to England from Canada about 1928. My mother Dorothy was their only child born in Toronto in 1925.
I have also looked at passenger lists for my mother when she went to NZ in 1946, and Florence (who had remarried at this stage) in about 1948. The lists show nothing which leaves me not very confident in them.
Thank you again.
