Thanks Sylvia in Canada - I'll give your instructions a try - may have to write them out first - memory dip lol.
Yes - and who are all these people that I am supposed to know? It says that acting on the six degrees of separation I will know or have some common ground with these people - I don't. And I don't want my name and details given out to other people who might just have passed through where I lived twenty years ago, or whatever is the criteria.
I don't belong to Facebook - kids wouldn't let me anyway, its not for Grandmas they say - but if this is the way FR think they are going to keep people with them, they are sadly deluded I think.
A pity because it was a useful and useable site.

FR Connections is still present

you just can't access it from FR.

It's at the top here on GR, having lost "Connections" but saying community, chat, msg boards.

I suggest you access through that or by googling, then put it into your favourites for future easy access.

Hi

FR seems to have become a free site almost literally overnight ............. it seems to have come into effect on May 1

You can still find all the leavers in a current year ...... look in My Places on your home page, click on the school and there are two upper lines ... one saying Total Members, the lower says a year and number in that year, plus an up arrow and a down arrow to move from one to the other.

All the messages that had been left on school boards, photos etc seem to have disappeared into the ether.

The aboslute WORST thing, and something that a number of people have been complaining about on Connections, is that they now show a woman's current or MARRIED name in at least two places.

1. On your home page, there is a box:-

News from friends and members at my places

Latest news from members at my places

03/05/2008 Christine xxxxx is now friends with Malcolm xxxxx
03/05/2008 Mina xxxxx is now friends with Tracey xxxxxx

I have removed the persons' surnames for obvious reasons!

In most cases, I have not the slightest idea who these people are!!! In the case of the one or two people I do know .......... the women are shown under their married name, which is not the name they had been using on the site.

2. If you go and look at your email listings, all emails are now shown as being sent under a woman's married name. I believe that when you send or get an email through the new FR, it will carry your current name.

Now, I know that we all registered on there using our current name, usually because this is the name on our credit card .... but that name has never been shown in the open before on FR.

As to the reason .................. they have been loosing out to Facebook and all the other sites that have emerged over the last few years.

re subscriptions .......... one lady on Connections had just renewed her FR subscription ......... she emailed them to complain, and cited Business Practices law. They replied almost immediately, and said they would refund her £9.50 ....... but she would have to send them her postal address as they would have to issue a cheque because her credit card was out-of-date so they couldn't charge back to it.

date on credit card?? 07/09 (mm/yy)

They had been able to charge to it a couple of days before!!

I think my father would have called them a daft ha'porth!

Had not looked at Friends R for a couple of months - went to it last night and can't understand my way round it at all. There does not seem to be any way of just looking at all the leavers for a particular year any more. You have to put in the names, and if you can't remember - it was 1961 - who was in the class above or below you, you are stuck.
It used to be user friendly and now seems totally useless Is it me?

Oh Rita,

No this does not mean you can search on genes for census of births, marriage and death, they charge you for each search you do on Genes Reunited as you have to buy credits and everyone will tell you its a ripoff, just don't do it. The £9:95 yearly payment is just so you can use the various boards, General, Tips, Records and so on.
Anyone will tell you not to buy Genes Reunited Credits to search, just post a message on the records board and someone will help you.
If you do want to subscibe to any website then get Ancestry.

Betty.

I have been a member of GR for a long time, and have just allowed my continuous renewal to take place. GR have charged me £9.95 for a further 12 months - However, I have now altered my account details from Continuous renewal to 12 monthly.

My intention is NOT to renew my membership next April 2009 on principal - plus. I don't feel as though I am getting value for money any more.
