Could someone explain the protocol for request to access your tree, I have sent messages to members that I have found some part matches with and asked for more information on this match, on 2 occasions, the response has been to ask for access to my tree but not allow access to their tree.

The first person I gave acess to, did not get back to me and I sent a message to say I could not open their tree, they then gave access but had taken information from my tree and placed in into theirs.

I have not responded to this second request as yet.
What should I do?
should I allow this in good faith?
can someone tell me is this the norm?

What I do when anyone asks for my tree to be opened is to send a message back saying that I do not open my tree unless I am really sure there is a match. I then give them a little bit of information around the person that they think is a match and ask if it corresponds with information they have.

Usually by doing this they will send you a little bit of information and you will be able to see if it is a match.

If it is then I send a message saying that I will open my tree and ask them to open theirs.

Before I take any information off anyone elses tree I do ask permission.

Hi Lois

I have my tree only open to about 4 people 3 are related and 1 isn't but we share a surname from the same area, and these 4 have never coping from my tree, but i did open it to some who copied the whole lot, so since then i don't.

Elva

If someone chooses not to open there tree that's down to them, and it shouldn't be insinuated that cos they choose not to then they shouldn't be here

I'm like Julie, I no longer open my tree. but this does not mean I don't share information.

Julie spends a lot of her free time on here doing a terrific job helping others, who I'm sure are very glad that she's a member

Julie,
As I have only been a member for less than 2 months I thought it was a relevant questiion to ask

was it the normal way to request access?,

Your comment is relavent but it isn't that I don't want to share.

The request for access came by auto reply
but didn't respond to the question or offer to share.

I think Christine is on the right track, I am in control of my tree and I shoudn't feel I have to give access if I am not sure, there is a match I need to ask again for information.

I had a contact that had my g/parents as a match but when I seen the tree I new it was wrong. I explained where it was wrong and once the member realised it, we are sorting through by personal email to help rebuild her tree

I allowed her to access to my tree so she could eliminate the wrong members. so sharing isnt the problem.

I think in this case it is a little close to home being my father it isn't ggg/aunty so and so, I need to know if it is my father on there tree or another relative with the same common name

and I would just like to thank Dewdrop for helping and also Kerrie doing Aust.look ups they gave me so much infomation for my tree and helped several branches that is one good reason to be a member and I think it was Shirley who sent some interesting information as well
love you girls xxxx
.
thanks for the support Julie..............Lois
ps I have only been a member for less than 2 months

thankyou..........Lois

I look at the site and the boards and though what a great community of people just like family - only better and my first contact was a fantastic lady in channel islands, had my Welsh /Irish side and I had the Ausy side it work to both our advantage in contact through personal email exchanged photos docs, and certs. and is my 3rd cousin, would not have found her without GR

Elva,

All forgiven,
You girls do a fantastic job

with the Ausy side you come to a hault when you have to go back to the English side and GR is great site for making those contacts

I have LDS -- PAF5 on my computer and dont have every thing on GR but dont know how to do a gemcom as yet, learnt how to scan and send emails
.
Christine's advice is pretty much how I do it, but I had only followed one side of the family up until I joined GR

And now I am like the bank add that says - it has branches everywhere.
