but I can't find her on the death registers between the 1891 and 1901 censuses. I've also discovered she was probably 3 years older than I thought and in the 1901 census would have been 15. Can I assume that she may have left home at that age to go out to wotk do you think?

Post the 1891 details.

Some one might have some ideas

I'll have to go and get them again.
Hang on.

Very likely shes left home - kids were in service at 12 sometimes.

But give us the details. Im surprised that in the first census they would have been 3 years out though, kids normally have pretty accurate ages for obvious reasons! So she is shown as 2 but was 5??? Hmm.

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 15:16

In the 1891 census she was 1. I'd found another girl with a similar name.
She was
May Elizabeth Flatman
She lived in Banham (Guiltcross)
Her mother was Elizabeth (maiden name unknown)
Father was Arthur
She had a brother Spencer

I'd assumed she was dead before the next census I suppose due to the fact that her Mum dies in 1895, very possibly in labour with a fifth child who also died.

Yes that's the same family. Spencer is my hubby's Great Grandad

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 15:46

So from the 1891 census May would be about 12 by the 1901 census. I would still guess that she maybe died but unless I find her on a death register I can't be certain. I might take a trip to the graveyard which is local to where they were in 1901 and see if she's there.

Where is May Elizabeth?

SallyF

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 15:59

Jim it told me on the census transcription here that she was May Elizabeth. The original could read like Mary C. I'd read it as May B to start with. But either way she disappeared.

When I search the 1891 census where you can click to view the records I get:
FLATMAN ARTHUR 31 Banham, Guiltcross View
FLATMAN ELIZABETH 21 Banham, Guiltcross View
FLATMAN SPENCER 3 Banham, Guiltcross View
FLATMAN MAY E 1 Banham, Guiltcross

SallyF

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 16:11

I know. It's rather confusing. The only thing I can think is that as there were at least two Flatman families in Guiltcross there is some cross 'contamination'.

SallyF

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 16:16

Thanks Karen. That looks a possibility doesn't it. Her brother Spencer was married in 1912 so 1916 wouldn't be too far out for her to get wed. I'll pursue that line for a while thanks.

SallyF

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 16:25

Ta for that.
One other question that has raised it's head since I started this thread.
Is it censuses or censi? :)

Thelma

Thelma Report 1 Apr 2008 16:27

You might explain who the Catherine is with Spencer 1901
birth
Catherine May Flatman 1890 Jan-Feb-Mar Guiltcross Norfolk
marriage
Catherine May Flatman 1906 Oct-Nov-Dec Thetford Norfolk, Suffolk

SallyF

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 16:30

I think the he did have a sister Catherine May as well Jim. Although she isn't on the 1891 census she is on the 1901 one. Also there were a lot of Flatman families round there then and they were fairly large families at that. I think the 1906 record you refer to is a marriage.

Carrie Report 1 Apr 2008 16:33

Just to throw in a Spanner, is it possible maybe Harriet Bond is their Grandmother??

Flatman Arthur Guiltcross 4b 343

SallyF

SallyF Report 1 Apr 2008 16:38

Yes I think Harriet Bond is the Grandmother and if she's Elizabeth's mother it makes more sense now. Thank you Carrie and everyone for all the help.

So,you cannot accept that this is the same girl?
