Now I don't want to sound too 'Thick', but I've tried freebmd and I don't seem to get much further than the name and date which I've put in..When I du find a name, and click on for moore info - nothing.
So if all yoe experts at this freebmd can give me a stip by step intro, I (and I'm sure many more) would be only too grateful... I'm also going to buy a new keyboard - this one can't spell... Many thanks.. "All At Sea"......

What type of 'more info' are you expecting to find? You can't view actual certificates or anything, you will just get the District, vol and page number to enable you to order the certificate from the GRO.

Sometime less info entered is better, if the criteria does not match, it wont show, broaden your search scope and dont forget to use wildcard characters if needed in the search.
? will replace one letter in a name,
* will replace more than one.

For instance Fra* will return instances of Francis, Frances, and any other combination of letters after Fra.

? will return any letter in the position placed, ie Franc?s will return Frances and Francis.

And as Elizabeth says, it is not yet complete, I am currently transcribing 1927 births, others are doing deaths and other marriages. So ongoing, and updated about every 3-4 weeks or so. You can check the coverage on the site.

You should be on this page:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Select birth, marriage or death, enter the name you want, and possibly the county and dates, and click on Find.

Can you give us an example of a search that hasn't worked for you? You won't find anything after about 1920 (see the coverage page), but you should get good results before that.

Hi Mary - Marriage John Robert Nunn. 1919 in Shildon, Cunty Durham.. Regards, John

KeithInFujairah Report 26 Feb 2008 16:41

There is this one there
Q2 1919

Nunn John R, Walsh Auckland 10a 559

I found that by entering Nunn John, marriage, all counties, all districts, mar 1919-dec1919,
Auckland covers Shildon.

If you click on the page number (559) it will bring up all people on that page,
Marriages Jun 1919 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bussey Annie Vickers Auckland 10a 559
Hodgson Isabel Stevens Auckland 10a 559
Nunn John R Walsh Auckland 10a 559
Vickers Arnold Bussey Auckland 10a 559

So you can see he married ?????
So much for that lol. There must be some mis-transcription somewhere.

Are you putting in the year?

Better not to.........

Don't forget that after 1911, the second name is not listed in full.........just the initial (if anything).....so just use the one forename.........

Many thanks Reg, I didn't know that.. John

MaryfromItaly Report 26 Feb 2008 16:46

This is presumably the one:

Marriages Jun 1919 (>99%)
Nunn John R / Walsh / Auckland 10a 559

If you click on the number 559 you get all the marriages on the page:

Marriages Jun 1919 (>99%)
Bussey Annie Vickers Auckland 10a 559
Hodgson Isabel Stevens Auckland 10a 559
>> Nunn John R Walsh Auckland 10a 559
Vickers Arnold Bussey Auckland 10a 559

However, as your Nunn married a Walsh there seems to be an indexing error somewhere.

You can check the *complete* BMD index on Ancestry to find her name.

If you don't have an Ancestry sub, somebody will find it for you.
