Is there any chance she may have married again? Also have you just looked for Gertrude P or Patricia G or without the initials added?

Joanne An inquest is an inquiry about why something happened (in your dad's case, why the accident happened and if it was anyone's fault). If I were you I would get in touch with the nearest large library to where the death occured as they will have copies of the local newspapers from that time on film. I managed to get the newspaper report of my great grandfathers accident in which he died. Kath. x

Jo Anyone who doesn't die in the hospital/or suspicius circumstances has an inquest i think, i may be wrong i am sure someone will correct me if i am. Phone the Hospital where your dad died and ask for the local coroners office telephone number, they may be a bit more helpful. Especially as you have the date of the inquest etc I am looking to see if Gertrude married again. and please forgive my spelling it's late :o)

You can also look in the death column in the local paper at the library for a couple of days after the death, as most people put a death notice in the paper and that usually gives the time and place of funeral, and often the name of the undertakers, who might be able to help with place of burial. Joanne If your father's death was in Welwyn Garden City and the coroner was in Hitchin, his death wouldn't be registered in Enfield. nell

Janice Report 23 Aug 2006 23:49

Gertrude Patricia Herbert registered in Ware. Mothers name Smith. Registered March Quarter 1920. REF: 3a 1771 Gertrude P Herbert marriage to George Atkin. District Ware. June Quarter 1939. REF:3a 3051 Gertrude P Herbert/Atkin marriage to Frederick W Coulstock District Ware. December Quarter 1949. REF: 4b 399 Seems odd everything registered under Gertrude Patricia or Gertrude P for above documents. Cannot see why she does not show on deaths. Have you thought she may still be alive? Would be 86 now. Will see if I can find death or remarriage. Janice

Joanne's father was born to Frederick William Coulthard even though his mother was still married to Mr. Atkin at the time. Your maiden name is always your maiden name (if you mean on the birth certificate). Kath. x

At least from Janice's reply we now know that Gertrude did eventually marry Frederick William Coulstock, so that should be the name she died with (if she didn't marry a third time). I'm off to bed now. Will come back to this tomorrow so see how it's going. Been on this site nearly all day!!!!!!! Kath. x
