??????????????

DAVIES, JANE 40
GRO Reference: 1857 S Quarter in CARDIGAN Volume 11B Page 7

Wales, Select Births and Baptisms, 1541-1907
Name: Jane Evans
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 20 Apr 1817
Baptism Place: Llanddewi-Brefi,Cardigan,Wales
Father: Davd Evans
Mother: Margret

It's only guesswork until Jane & Benjamin can be found on 1851 census

greyghost Report 18 Feb 2020 11:28

You say all 3 census give consistent ages for the children and in 1861 Joshua's age was 5 with a birth year shown as 1856 - but he was actually born in 1855

Census and ages - take a census date of midnight 1 April 1861

eg. 1861 - anyone aged 5 at census time would be shown as born 1856 (1861-5 = 1856), but in reality ¾ are more likely to have been born in 1855. Anyone born 2 April 1855 to 1 April 1856 would be 5 on 1 April 1861
And then there's getting the age wrong in the first place.

ErikaH Report 18 Feb 2020 10:17

Elizabeth's age in 1861 is 38 - quite clearly -on the original census record .

June

June Report 18 Feb 2020 09:58

My initial concern on my tree was this floor regarding the age differences I had of Benjamin Davies & his wife Elizabeth Jones who he married in 1858. On the original hand written scripts for the 1861 census it states Benjamin is 40 and it looks like Elizabeth is 26, however on both 1861 census's computerised by Genes Reunited and Find my Past they give the ages as 40 & 38 Ref. RGO9, 56,17, 4178, which I prefer to think are correct. All 3 of these references also state the 3 children John 9 (1852), David 8 (1853) and Joshua 5 (1856), he was actually born in 1855/Christened in 1856, all 3 were from his first marriage.
Regarding Benjamin and his first marriage to Jane Thomas nee Evans on the 12 Sep. 1850, I know Jane's father was called David Evans, but I don't seem able to track down her D.O.B and her mothers name. She also must have died between 1855 when Joshua was born and before 1858 when Benjamin remarried.

You must have worked back to Benjamin somehow.

Which children do you definitely know are his?

June

June Report 14 Feb 2020 08:23

So am I,
On the 1850 marriage to Jane Thomas, it stated Benjamin's father was John Davies and Jane Thomas's father was David Evans. Jane was a widow so her 1st husband was must have been a Thomas. However I will have to have a complete rethink, the info I have from the 1861 and 1871 census's shows a big floor in my tree as the ages between Benjamin & Elizabeth differ by 14 years. In the 1861 census they are 40 &26 whilst in the 1871 census they are 51 & 48. It is the 1861 census where they are listed with 3 children John, David & Joshua.
As Arnie said (I WILL BE BACK.)

I’m losing the plot here. ;-) ;-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Feb 2020 14:25

June said that she thought Benjamin and Jane (nee Thomas) had had the children Joshua, David, and John, which is what I'm querying.

ADDED:

June -
you said that Jane Thomas had previously been married to an Evans.
Did you perhaps mean that Jane Evans had been married to a Thomas ??

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Feb 2020 09:44

The MMN would be Evans, not Thomas, assuming the births were even registered

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Feb 2020 09:24

Have you found Joshua's birth to support your theory about Jane and the children in 1861, please?

I don't see a Joshua Davies, mms Thomas, born in Cardiganshire.

There are a few possibilities for David if your theory's correct:

DAVIES, DAVID mms THOMAS

DAVIES, DAVID mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1853 J Quarter in NEWCASTLE IN EMLYN Volume 11B Page 25

DAVIES, DAVID mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1854 M Quarter in CARDIGAN Volume 11B Page 12

Also for John:

DAVIES, JOHN mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1852 M Quarter in CARDIGAN Volume 11B Page 13

DAVIES, JOHN mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1852 D Quarter in NEWCASTLE IN EMLYN Volume 11B Page 28

DAVIES, JOHN mms THOMAS

DAVIES, JOHN mms THOMAS
GRO Reference: 1853 M Quarter in NEW CASTLE IN EMLYN Volume 11B Page 22

There are also Davids and Johns born in other places in Cardiganshire in the approximate years, but I've posted those from Cardigan and Newcastle in Emlyn reg districts as being the most likely.

Have you bought any birth certs to check for the parents' names?

June Report 13 Feb 2020 08:55

Hi Erika, Definately agree with the 1841 census regarding John father, Mary Mother,Benjamin son & Sarah Daughter. I also agree with 1871 census where Davies had been miss read as Dacres.
With regard to Benjamin I had previously come up with the following conclusion:
Benjamin Davies married Jane Thomas in 1850, (she had previously been married to a Benjamin Evans.). They had 3 children Joshua 1856, David 1853 & John 1852.
This is reflected by the 1861 census.
Sadly by the 1871 census Jane had died and Benjamin remarried Elizabeth Jones and had 3 more children Mary 1862, Ester 1863 & Owen 1865, The original children being in their late teens had all left home. I found them all working as servants.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 10 Feb 2020 12:39

It could also be that Elizabeth wasn't a spinster when she married in 1858

I was going by the birthplace, which matches one of the baptisms, but until the OP comes back with more info, it's all guesswork ;-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 Feb 2020 11:37

I had discounted that 1861 census because of Joshua's possible birth:

DAVIES, JOSHUA mms EVANS
GRO Reference: 1856 M Quarter in CARDIGAN Volume 11B Page 13

David and John aren't so clear cut.
There are both Davies/Evans and Davies/Jones births which would be possible.

Not that these are actually of any help, either, in the quest for factual info about Benjamin

It might help to know when and where Jane died.....................

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 Feb 2020 11:14

Having trouble finding them on censuses - the names are so common, and in 1861 there's no Benjamin/Elizabeth couple in Cardiganshire (assuming that's where they lived) which gives Benjamin's YOB as 1819.

This looks like the most likely ???

Benjamin Davies
in the 1861 Wales Census

EDIT:

But having investigated further, I think this Elizabeth is Elizabeth Evans, who married a Benjamin Davies in 1856.
There are matching children's births.

Marriages Jun 1856 (>99%)
DAVIES Benjamin Cardigan 11b 1
EVANS Elizabeth Cardigan 11b 1

Either of these could be Mary's birth:

Presumably, you got Benjamin's father's name from his marriage cert...................

The baptism locations are 15 miles apart - quite a long way in the early 19th century

Have you found Benjamin on censuses with birthplace info?
