I don't think he married before he joined up, having scanned his records

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 22 Feb 2019 15:44

Just for reference his service record says Lieutenant Sergeant on the third page

ErikaH Report 22 Feb 2019 15:46

Interesting - must confess I didn't scrutinise the records, except for trying to see who his NOK was.

BUT - I was referring to the marriage cert when I queried the rank.

LaGooner Report 22 Feb 2019 15:46

Erica on the wedding certificate it states he is Widow and also the service records have yes crossed out and no replacing it. I have seen this done before a few times when I was doing a WW1 research project

No problem Shirley :-). Army records are not easy to read or understand either. The marriage I found in Droxford was not him so I am still looking to find first marriage.

I have been digging again and found a marriage that I would appreciate an opinion on please.

George possibly married Emily Chaffey 1894 in Christchurch. I could not find a death for her, however do you think they may have divorced as I found her later on still in Hampshire under her maiden name and a death in 1957. According to the 1939 register she was born 4 July 1879.

Do you think this could possibly be worth sending for the marriage certificate to prove fathers names

Mary Report 24 Feb 2019 11:39

Wouldn't George only have been around 15 if he married in 1894 if he was born 1879.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Feb 2019 12:58

When George joined up, his occupation was Schoolmaster. Unlikely, then, that the Engineer who travelled abrod in 1926 is the same man - especially as he was an Army Officer in 1916.

And what became of Gwendoline?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Feb 2019 13:03

The rank on Page 3 of his Service Reord is Lance-Sgt. It is not Lieutenant Sgt, which does not exist as a rank

He was 'discharged at his own request' in Sept.1902 - having paid £18.00

In other words, he 'bought himself out'

He must obviously have re-enlisted at some stage, and been commissioned. No way of knowing, at the moment, whether it was a regular commission, or a field commission.

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 24 Feb 2019 14:25

He's a problem isn't he :-). I am still digging about myself with no luck. I could not find Gwendoline either NOTE ... Her full name is Florence Gwendoline born 1877. Redcar hence the 2 births in Newcastle area methinks
