Just carrying on from the info AG found re births of children for James Gallagher and Jane Coyle.

They were indeed married in Ireland

I've downlaoded the image for the birth of John Gallagher born December 30th1860, parents: James Gallagher and Jane Coyle- living at New Stevenston, Bothwell (Holytown)
James was a labourer at colliery. It also gives a marriage date of March 1844- it difficult to read, but it ends in Tyrone.

So likely marriage?:

First name(s) James
Last name Gallagher
Address -
Marriage year 1844
Marriage date 19 Feb 1844
Parish Ardstraw West
Alternative parish names Ardstraw West and Castlederg, Castlederg
Diocese Derry
Spouse's first name(s) Jane
Spouse's last name Cayle
County Tyrone
Country Ireland

Well done AustinQ for confirming that was the correct Andrew Baxter. I han't found those newspaper reports that you found to confirm his address.

I wondered if the Andrew on the valuation rolls was his son as sometimes a son is listed as head of household rather than the widow.

RG- I only added to the information you'd already found. It was a great find and will certainly save a few credits on SP.

I did wonder if the Andrew on the valuation roll was a son- or perhaps they were not updated.

Well done, RG and AQ, finding Andrew's death.

Lateral thinking is one of the joys of family tree research!

Just reading through the thread. Ian you posted that Lizzie's son Andrew died in 1926:

'Death 1926 Glasgow parents Andrew Baxter & Jane Gallagher'

Who was the informant on Andrew's death certificate?

Strange
Why would Lizzie Russell / Gallagher
On both her marriage clearly but parents James Russell and Jane Kyle
yet Thomas Baxter but's Elizabeth's parents James Gallagher and Jane Coyle on her death certificate.

RG answered that yesterday:

"The only possibility that I can think of is that James Gallagher died and Jane remarried a Mr. Russell and Elizabeth took her stepfather's name. "

But we can't see any marriage (so far) of a Jane Gallagher/Kyle/Coyle to a James Russell, so it's just a reasonable guess.

Or maybe James changed his name, or was sometimes known as Gallagher and sometimes as Russell, for some reason.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 9 May 2018 15:46

Ian- it is strange- and there could be various reasons as to why there is the Gallagher/ Russell name change- but the Elizabeth Gallagher birth fits both time and place of birth. It also seems likely, given Thomas registered both his brother's and mother's death using the surname Gallagher that he knew of her previous name.

So now we have to try and establish what happened to the Gallaghers (I'm struggling to find any of them). It might be that they died and Elizabeth was brought up by a family named Russell, or perhaps someone in the family was in trouble with the law and they all changed their names to avoid association. Elizabeth's mother may have re-married Mr Russell.... Like I said there could be many reasons. All this is further complicated as they also have Irish links which are more difficult to follow during the years we need.

Just in case it's of any use the birth certificate for Elizabeth's brother John in December 1860 gave the address as New Stevenston, Holytown. When her brother Thomas was born on 25th October 1864 Dalziel, the address was given as Baillies Land, Motherwell.
----------------------------

Given that brother Thomas was born in Dalziel, there is this possible death for her father James (I don't have any credits to view):

Death:
JAMES GALLAGHER
Age: 50
Year of death: 1866
Ref: 639/ 33
RD Name: Dalziel

(However- there is a James Gallagher in Dalziel in 1861 census, married to Eliza- both born Ireland, but no sign of the Gallagher children with them. The above death might relate to this James)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 May 2018 16:38

Can't find any of the family in 1871, either as Gallagher or as Russell - unless their birthplace wasn't recorded accurately in censuses.

Unfortunately, Gallagher is a very common name, as are all their first names.

I had wondered about that 1866 death, AQ.

On Ancestry, I don't see any James Gallagher in Dalziel in 1861, except a child born 1860.

The only James married to Eliza and born Ireland, showing in Ancestry, lived in Govan.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 9 May 2018 16:49

Afternoon AG. This was the census I was referring to (FMP transcription)- so it may be that that death isn't our James:

1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Glenhead, Dalziel, Lanarkshire, Scotland

James Gallagher Head Married Male 46 1815 Coal Miner Ireland
Eliza Gallagher Wife Married Female 53 1808 - Ireland
James Hart Step Son Unmarried Male 23 1838 Coal Miner Ireland
James Kelly Boarder Unmarried Male 22 1839 Coal Miner Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland
Eliza Callohon Grand Child Unmarried Female 6 1855 - Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland
----------------------------------

There also seem to be a few variations in spelling of Gallagher- Gallacher which doesn't help.

Yes- very Wow! Great stuff :-D

So now we know we won't find the children with their parents

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 9 May 2018 17:20

Well Ian now we know that Jane didn't remarry as she predeceased James. It also gives a reduced timescale for Jane's death. It now looks as Elizabeth was "adopted" by another family as she would only have been about 7 years old when she was orphaned. Who was the informant on James's death certificate please?

It also would explain why we aren't find Elizabeth and her brothers together on the 1871 census.
