No Francis living with them

The two births are very close together. Maybe not the same family

Probably why the confusion to Margaret of her fathers name

Maybe the parents has parted so she didn’t know her fathers Christian name

A Joseph might have been in her life so she assumed he was her father

PatW

PatW Report 1 Apr 2022 11:07

Jane Walls had a daughter Margaret Alice born in 1862 and father listed as George Holderness and the father for Francis is also George Holderness. When Margaret married aged 17 her father is listed as Joseph Holderness. How can you forget your own fathers Christian name.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 1 Apr 2022 09:56

She doesn't have to have been married to anyone - she could have simply implied that she was by the way she gave the information

Was there a FATHER's name on the cert?

PatW

PatW Report 1 Apr 2022 09:52

I have now received the birth certificate for Francis Holderness born on the 22/12/1863 but I’m still puzzled as his mother is listed as Jane Holderness late Whitley formerly Walls.
I know Jane’s maiden name was Walls but does it mean she was married to someone called Whitley then to someone called Holderness? If that is the case then the marriage to the Whitley chap must be before 1863 and I’ve been looking for one much later than that.
I would be grateful for your thoughts.

Going back to William Whitley

The one who died in 'Heaton' in 1896 was born in 1816...........

Deaths Jun 1896 (>99%)
Whitley William 80 Lancaster 8e 462

The Heaton in question is Heaton with Oxcliffe - between Lancaster and Morecambe.

I lived there in my teens

I’ve only sent for one at the moment as I thought I would see what his father’s name is and If it’s the same as the one on his sisters birth certificate.
Thanks for the thought.

ArgyllGran Report 9 Mar 2022 12:30

It's too late to tell you now, if you've already sent for both the apparent birth certs for Francis -

but you only needed to send for one as there's only one certificate.

I assume you've ordered via LancsBMD, as there's only one birth entry on GRO - mmn Walls.

PatW

PatW Report 9 Mar 2022 12:22

Thank you for that. I’ve sent for the certificates so hopefully I will get answers.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 Mar 2022 09:12

If you were to send for the birth cert, I expect you would see that the surnames Walls and Whitley are given as alternative names for the mother.

Francis's birth is only registered once, and there is only one birth cert, but both of Jane's names will be on the cert.

However, I think you need to send for the birth cert, to see exactly what the wording is.

Walls seems to be her actual maiden surname - that's the only one shown on the GRO site.

Whitley is clearly another name she was known by - but you need the cert to see the exact wording.
If it's a married name, or if she'd taken the name of a man she wasn't married to - that shouldn't be shown as a maiden name .

It could be a transcription mistake, or a mistake by the registrar.
You need the cert.

PatW Report 8 Mar 2022 23:23

When Jane Holderness/Whitley died in 1899 on her death certificate it says she was the widow of William Whitley deceased. When her son Francis was born in 1864 according to the Lancashire records her maiden name was Walls but there is also a registration below saying her name was Whitley with the same registration number. Does anyone know if he could have been registered twice and does anyone know why the mothers name would be different.
I can’t find a marriage to anyone called Holderness or anyone called Whitley. I also can’t find a death for Holderness or Whitley.
Family history says that Jane married when she was pregnant with her first child and her husband left her to find his fortune in Australia and when he did he would send for her but he didn’t and she remarried. It was also said she was a bigamist as when she remarried she had no proof that her husband had died. I wondered if the son born in 1864 he was the son of William Whitley. Saying that her husband hadn’t been gone very long before she remarried. I know stories change in time so I’m not sure how much of this is true.
Im sorry if the above in garbled.

I want to apologise to all who have done their best to help with my conundrum.
I originally said that when Jane Walls/Holderness/Whitley died in 1899 and her husband was listed as George deceased but I've just found the certificate and found that should have read William Whitley deceased.

I've looked in Lancashire b.m.d and the only William Whitley I've found died in 1896 in Heaton but not sure where Heaton is other than Lancashire hold the records. Still can't find a marriage for a William Whitley and Jane Holderness though.

Gins. Francis .Holderness mmn Burrell is the wrong Francis. The one below it is the correct one.
The Jane Whitley who died in 1909 is also incorrect as I have her death certificate for 1899 and the informant was her daughter Margaret Alice. She was living with her daughter at the time of death. According to her certificate her husband whether it be George Holderness or George Whitley was already deceased. On the death certificate it says widow of George Whitley.
All very confusing but thanks for your help.
