Perhaps the 1871 census found by Sylvia IS the missing son, which means he died between 1871 and 1888

This is the 1871 census found by pollypocket.
Can someone else look at the census and read his marital status?
I cannot tell if it says married or widowed, but there is no obvious wife in the household?

This seems to be a small school, where the mother in law and unmarried Louisa Rawe are the School Mistresses. All others are pupils and two servants

I can't make out his marital status, but think this is his marriage (Harriet Louisa was with mother on 1861 census)

Ok , so we have TWO possible older boys... Alec or Alex. and Alfred J. Possibly born in Canada.

Alexander Crickett was with the 83 reg. of foot. joined in 1825, they were known to be stationed in Canada from 1834. by 1843 we know they're back in this country by births of subsequent children. I have had someone contact me who claims another daughter ,
Helen Maria 1842 Canada was visiting an uncle @1851 census. Could she have been a twin? with Alfred J ? But then where was he in 1851... hmmm.

The news article found by Quoy states Alfred is the oldest son, but it only mentions a floral tribute from him and wife Nellie. the article states Alec/x and Mrs A J were in the funeral carriage - they were the only family mentioned as attending the funeral.

Problem with this Alfred, if the article is correct and he was the oldest son surely Alexander would be younger, so don't think he could be a soldier & freeman of Ipswich in 1857 - at most he would only have been 14.

Maybe this Alfred is the wrong person?

I think , Alfred J is indeed James A. 1843.

Nooo I've got it. Eldest son of A.J. and Harriet... Alfred J.and HIS wife Nellie.

Other son's are deceased as the Nephew was sole executor. Alfred J Junior.

So back to Alec/Alex :)

Ha ha! Me too... Alexander Barber ... born around 1830's
Eldest son of Alexander Crickett Barber b1808 d1888. Ipswich and Hellen Manning(Manners)b 1810 d1888.Dublin.

A. C. was in the army from 1825 stationed in Canada from 1834.
The first child I have for them was born in Dublin 1833 .She is the only Irish born we can find. So I feel Alex Jnr was born in this country possibly Ipswich c1830's. He also was a soldier.
