If the marriage was at St John's it would be on Familysearch.
St John's ( sometimes referred to as the Parish Church) was the only church in Preston whose records were transcribed onto the IGI.

Hi. Yes that's the marriage I've got. It's the only one listed on BMD for William and Mary that year. He was still single on 1861 census, but on 1871 census there lists Elizabeth, daughter age 9 (1862?). On BMD births it lists Elizabeth's mothers maiden name as Medcalf. I haven't found the other children though.

Your help is so much appreciated.

Liverpool & Manchester do not have mmn transcribed on lancs bmd, in fact a lot of Liverpool is not on there at all. John James b 1867 also does not have mmn transcribed (Ashton comes under cheshire bmd)

The William & Mary Ann marriage is on the IGI but not on lan-opc.

The marriage of Wm and Mary in 1834 which appears on famillysearch is a submitted record .
It has not been transcribed from the parish registers - which is why it's not on lan-opc

So it wouldn't have been at St. John's church.

Just a pity that whoever volunteered the info didn't pinpoint a church.

Hi. Yes it is a shame. I've been on to Preston Records office and submitted an enquiry about the William and Mary marriage in 1834. Lets hope I get a reply. Where do we go from here?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 12 Nov 2010 16:14

actually Mike - the 1834 marriage would not be on lan-opc at St John's because the transcriptions finish at 1833 for marriages

but agree it should be on the igi

Thanks for your help so far.

do the churches at Cottam, Lea or Newsham feature anywhere in your research. They are the nearest churches to Woodplumpton where William was born, assuming that William was RC. He was not baptised at Woodplumpton Parish church (St Anne) as all those years are on lan-opc. There are several Rigby's but it is a fairly common name in these parts.

Just had a reply from Preston records office. There was a marriage listed at St John's Preston for William and Mary 26 May 1834, but marriages before 1837 didn't list parents of bride and groom. They suggest that I look for Baptism record, perhaps starting at St John's.

I haven't come across the other places that you mentioned. Thanks anyway.

Hi, again. Found baptism record for Margaret, daughter of William and Mary Cottam, St John's Preston.

You said the Rigby's were RC. At what generation did this appear please?

If Margaret was baptised at St John's it suggests that at that point they were CofE.

William was not baptised at St John's before 1807 and unfortunately 1807-1808 is on neither lan-opc nor the igi, nor was the baptism at Woodplumpton.

I may be going to the record office in the next couple of weeks so just trying to determine the best place to look if I have time and you have not found the answer by then.

do you know when William snr died? Is it worth looking for a will which may name a brother or sister as an executor. Cos to be honest looking for the right baptism of a William Rigby over a span of 2 years in this area could throw up several possibilities.

Hi Lancashire Ann. I can't be of much help regarding William snr death. I have not found him on any of the census after 1851. The burial you found of William from Broughton 1878 I'm not sure about as I have an 1861 census of him, married to Ellen and son Henry age 32. Different William Rigby I think! There's just so many of them, it's really confusing. I wonder if the other burial could be his, 22 April 1864?

I don't know how far back the RC religion was. I'm pretty sure that William Henry (yes another William) b 1866, son of William Jnr was RC, well his family was at least. Thanks

Hi. Just found out that Mary Rigby nee Cottam married again in March 1862. Could this mean that William died about the same time?

Mike * Report 15 Nov 2010 18:18

It says she was a widow so it appears William died

Marriage: 2 Mar 1862 St Saviour, Bamber Bridge, Lancashire, England
Henry Hull - (X), 46 yrs Labourer Widower of Bamber Bridge
Mary Rigby - (X), 47 yrs Widow of Bamber Bridge
Groom's Father: John Hull, Labourer
Bride's Father: William Cottam, Deceased
Witness: G. Lewis; Margaret Lewis, (X)
Married by Banns by: William Wignall

.... but looking at lancashirebdm on http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

I don't see a death with an age that fits
