Hmmm. That might be the correct family in 1851 after all:
Name: William Alfred Thompstone
Year of Registration: 1846
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire
Volume: 20
Page: 300

Just with young William using his middle name.

Deborah - can't see that 1851 Leaf St census - maybe you can read the ref off of the image. The piece # will be in the margin on the PRO copyright slip - it will be a # like HO107/2222. The folio # appears on half the images - if it appears, it will be a heavy stamped # in the top right. Finally, the page # will be at top centre.

With these 3 #s, we can look it up - even with no folio #, there'll only be a choice of half a dozen possible images.

Deborah e-mailed me the image. It's the same one I gave the transcript for. (terrible image, though). It's one of those resurrected typewritten ones.

So,is this the family for William???

Right - Ancestry doesn't have it - it lists ho107/2230 as one of Manchester's water damaged books - the Manchester FHS (I think it was them) did a special transcription of them using U/V light, etc. FMP has this transcription.
