wonder if the newspaper would print the whole story ? I dont think Peggy will be alive but her children might remember the orphanage story.
I have a photo here that seems to be peggys children. They may know themselves from the photo. Worth an email to a national canadian newspaper. Its a very interesting story for anyone to read they might just go for it without us having to pay for an advert.

Thats great news.

Going back to Peggy, could do the newspaper article. I have a friend in Canada who says the local paper is the Montreal Gazette. Also to try Canadas white pages, have had a look but couldnt find anyone that would be of Peggys age. Wandering if her name was actually Margaret or something that Peggy could be short for.

Any ideas?

So the info given by JaneyCanuck seems to fit

1911 census
GRIMWOOD THOMAS HENRY 1894 17 Romford Essex

who looks most like this one:
Births Mar 1894
Grimwood Thomas Henry Braintree 4a 681

Name: Thomas H Grimwood
Death Registration Month/Year: 1950
Age at death (estimated): 57
Registration district: London City
Inferred County: Greater London
Volume: 5d
Page: 127

Kinda knew it was Henry as a middle name but needed proof
Listed as deceased on Dudleys Marriage Cert in 1952

Julie

Julie Report 27 Oct 2010 23:33

Birth cert information from Dennis and Dudley Grimwood list their father as

THOMAS "HENRY" GRIMWOOD
a commercial Clerk

Julie

Julie Report 20 Sep 2010 18:13

Dont give up Tracy :(
I think we should do the newspaper story, what do you think ?

Tracy

Tracy Report 2 Sep 2010 23:48

Just a nudge up.
Nothing to report. Can't seem to find any more info. Feel like we have come to a dead end. Messages sent to possible family connections but no replys.

Tracy Report 25 Aug 2010 02:04

lol, think i read it five times, still confused.

My grandma said that Thomas Grimwood died when she and my grandad were "courting". She said she was 18 which would make his death 1950.

Julie

Julie Report 23 Aug 2010 23:40

Yeah too much info all at once, I have to read it at least 3 times... lol !

Tracy

Tracy Report 23 Aug 2010 13:32

Hi Julie, just sent you a PM and just been reading the recent threads, I'm now confused!! but will see what I can find out too.

Julie

Julie Report 23 Aug 2010 12:24

Tracy did you get my Emails I sent last week ?

Julie

Julie Report 21 Aug 2010 21:43

Didn't know the 1911 Census was free, thanks for the link, I will have a look for myself.
I wanted some names so Grandad could tell us if we were on the right track or not.
When the cert arrives I can cross ref with the useful info here
Thankyou Janey

Julie --

"So would be now looking for Thomas Grimwood born 1893. On 1911 census he would be 18
Could any one see if he is on the 1911 census?"

-- I suggested this one, above:

GRIMWOOD THOMAS HENRY 1894 17 Romford Essex

Living with that one seem to be

GRIMWOOD SUSANNAH MAY 1862 49
GRIMWOOD FRANCES MAY 1883 28
GRIMWOOD ALICE WRIGHT 1885 26
GRIMWOOD FLORENCE EDITH 1890 21
GRIMWOOD ELLEN 1892 19
GRIMWOOD FRANK JOHN 1896 15
GRIMWOOD GERTRUDE 1897 14

(That's what I found on a free search for Grimwood living with Thomas Henry Grimwood in Romford, and then double-checked by searching for Grimwood living with Susannah May Grimwood in Romford and got the same list -- which you can do too at
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx)

But I'm danged if I can find that household in 1901 or 1891, although I haven't seriously buckled down to it.

There are two Grimwood + Susannah marriages 1878-1884, in two places I've never heard of:

Marriages Dec 1879
GRIMWOOD Shadrach Cosford 4a 979
Grimwood Thomas Sparks Samford 4a 1285

(both are in Suffolk, it seems) Stil not seeing those ones in 1881 ...

I confess to not being fully conversant with this family yet. ;) Do you know Thomas's father's name from his marriage certificate? No, that's right -- well the thing is, you really just can't go any further with looking for him and his family until you have that!! Have you ordered it??

The thing I mentioned is that his marriage is in the GRO index as Thomas *S* Grimwood. And you haven't answered where you have the name Thomas *Henry* Grimwood from. So you really need that certificate before anybody spends time trying to help find his family.

note

from 1881 census, Shadrack Grimwood (Grimwade) married Emily Keziah Whistler. So the father of the 1911 batch could be Thomas Sparks Grimwood married to Sussanah Mary Burgess.

1881

Thomas Grimwood 23
Susannah Grimwood 22
Annie E. Grimwood

Name: Susannah Grimwood
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: Thomas
Where born: Stowmarket

Civil parish: Brantham
County/Island: Suffolk

and here they are in 1901 in Romford:

Thomas Grimwood 40
Mary Grimwood 40
John Grimwood 19
Louise Grimwood 14
Ada Grimwood 12
Florence Grimwood 11
Ellen Grimwood 9
Harry Grimwood 7 = Thomas Henry, presumably
Frank Grimwood 5
Gertrude Grimwood 4
George Grimwood 1
William Grimwood 3 months

Maybe the grandparents went to visit Peggy Grimwood and Aunt Nora Last who became Nora Hammond.
The Grandparents names are William Henry Last born 1860 and his wife was Lizzy
Maybe they were on a ship going to Canada for a visit too ?

Julie

Julie Report 21 Aug 2010 07:31

Need to ask Grandad some more questions ........

Julie

Julie Report 21 Aug 2010 07:25

Also, if Thomas was still alive his when his wife died in 1934, why didn't he take on the children? or was it the norm for the children if their mother died to be sent to an orphanage?

Julie

RE
Name: Thomas H Grimwood
Death Registration Month/Year: 1950
Age at death (estimated): 57
Registration district: London City
Inferred County: Greater London
Volume: 5d
Page: 127

London Connection fits in, a birth year of 1893 this means he was around 24 years old when Peggy was born

So would be now looking for Thomas Grimwood born 1893. On 1911 census he would be 18

Could any one see if he is on the 1911 census?
