Unfortunately Lynne, Certificates are not gospel........I have certificate with wrong names and occupations on....... Have you checked the 1861 census...there is a Margaret A Lewins/Lewens..father Thomas brother Joseph.

thanks for the info vera really appreciated i,m really puzzled by this one jonathan married margaret lewins father joseph but all his children have a mother called mary and on my grandas birth cert it says mother mary reaper formerly russell it,s got me stumped

i think i,ll leave it for today and start again tomorrow with fresh eyes ( and brain ) lol thankyou everyone for your help

when was your g/dad born???...asking so as to check an earlier marriage for mary to a mr Russell....this mary could have been married two or even three times before,i had one like this twas a bugger to find...got there in the end though

I think Lynnes grandad was Arthur born 1910 showing on the 1911 census on page 1 as the youngest child.

Like you i`ve been trying all sorts of marriage surnames trying to make the link, if Russel was Margaret/Marys birth name I can`t find her, and she married as Lewins, and gave her fathers name as Joseph Lewins??

I think theres a step family in here somewhere...one of the parents died and remarried/or lived with either a Russel or Lewins was the new partners name, unfortunatly i don`t think Lynne has any of the childrens births certs...... I advised her to get the 1st childs to confirm mothers maiden name..

I keep trying mispellings of Reaper, just to see if I can find a marriage that way.

The other thing is they say they`ve been married 23 years on the 1911 census, but the marriage took place in 1885, which is nearer to 26 years!!


Its mystery, and also Marys year of birth seems to change with each census...

Right..... Pure speculation, but what if Margaret Lewins and Mary Russell arn`t the same person??

Mary first appears on the 1891 census age 22, her "Mother in law" lists her as married to her son Jonathan ,but then she would probably, wether they were married or not.

Margaret was 25 on the marrriage cert. in 1885,........... shed have been 30/31 by the 1891 census.

I cannot find a death for a Margaret Reaper that fits in for a death soon after the marriage ,nor a marriage to a Mary Russell for Jonathan before 1891,..... in fact not at all. People were notorious for lying to" look respectable ".......Mary claims they have been married 23 years in 1911, making a marriage date of c1888........one year before the birth of first son John william , how convenient!!

I don`t know what happened to Margaret/Lewins Reaper, but I just don`t think she is Mary nee Russell, I really think you need to get birth certs for at least 2 of the children, John William and Arthur your grandfather and see if the details match up.... I always try to get birth, marriage and death certs for my "direct Line" to confirm I am tracking the correct people..

If you do get them please add the outcome to this thread as I would be intrigued to know.

there does'nt appear to be a child born to jonathaon of the name mary...
