I think i'm in a perpetual circle with my own tree.... so it's nice witnessing everyone else going round in circles with someone elses!!

Tracey, I think we often go round in circles. Getting clarity is one of the purposes of this website. Interpreting stuff, etc.

Tracey, I imagine "Mary Ross Jones, widow of...., his sister" means she was the sister of the person making the will.

You might be right with your other comments.

Celia, are any of the other names on the declaration worthy of investigation?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 14 Mar 2010 08:56

You state "Mary Ross Jones, widow of Samuel Charles Jones, his sister"

How does that make sense?

His sister?

....can i also just add, your giving alot of weight to the widow thing...but wills are very much like death certs the info is only as good as the knowledge of the person writing it! It maybe that Mary Ross was living with Samuel when he died, and obviously being 'back in the day' when living in sin was unthought of the writer of the will naturally assumed she was married again? therefore making her his widow, and maybe why they call her Mary Ross Jones, knowing she was Mary Ross beforehand, they have merely 'given' her her husbands surname, but does seem they are a little unsure about it, leaving her previous married name in. Being aloing way from home and communication not as it is now, they may not have had chance to communicate the real cirsumstances?

Okay, I think we are getting nowhere fast. Mary/Laura Ross/Jones can't be found as a married lady.

The will which caused her to inherit should have the names of the solicitors on it. Perhaps contacting them would tell you where she was living at the time (or if she had died), and why she didn't actually inherit in the end.

Do we read anything into the statement that the will mentioned Mary Ross Jones?

Celia says her mother and uncle inherited. That sort of implies that it WAS left to the father, and by his will it went to his children, which sorts out the Uncle (presumably Ernie).

So I assume Celia's grandparents were dead, hence their money came down to the next generation, her mother. Does that sound right Celia? Don't answer if it is sensitive information, I'm not being nosey.

But I do know of instances in my own family where money was left to a specific individual (my mother) and she chose to dish it out amongst other relatives who weren't legally entitled, she just felt it was right.

None of that helps to find Laura/Mary and how she came to be a Jones - if indeed she did.

Hmmm good thinking MM, i do wonder then when did the father die?

This would indicate the age of the will?

I got the impression she only inherited because her father had died. I know nowt about the law regarding wills and certainly not in the USA (JANEY!!!!). So I gathered he had left money to his father (why would anyone do that?), and she inherited as his next of kin (one of).

Celia

Celia Report 12 Mar 2010 20:15

my mother and her uncle inthis country received money
im wondering if she changed her name they hated their father

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 12 Mar 2010 20:13

Celia, it helps us get the right person if we get as full a picture as possible of the family. Just in case something has gone wrong along the way.

His daft registration card states his brother James Ross was living in Texas in 1942.
