Hi I was wondering if anyone has any idea how long the coming soon regions will take. I've searched for my grandma and she's not in any of the counties already added and is not at home with her mother and grandparents.

I think that the census should be free- after all the goverment is bailing out greedy banks in their millions at the tax payers expense & after all it IS our heritage.

All it says on the website is "coming soon".

People are guessing anywhere from spring to summer.


It may also be that your grandma's name has been mistranscribed or misspelled .......... but unfortunately the 1911 does not yet have the ability to search using wild cards.

as I understand it, it is NOT the government that is transcribing the information. It is a private company that has been doing it, even though they do have what looks like a official government site.


I presume the government may have put it out to tender.

So the privtae company has to make its money!

I'd not thought about trying different variants of her name. I'll have a go.

By all accounts the standard of transcription is very poor. Some of the ones reported in the press suggest that it has been outsourced to some 3rd world country where the workers are not familiar with English names and place names. (Can you imagine the level of errors if English people transcribed a Polish census?) Does anyone know?

oh, I could believe that!!

I heard that some of the other censuses were outsourced to India ..... and just look at the number of mis-transcriptions on them.



Mind you, I understand that the instructions to transcribers include that they have to put down what they see, not what they think (or know) a word is/ should be

The discount code I've just used is for 10% off and does work because it's just knocked £2.50 off the cost.

The code is UYR23PAYG. I assume this code can be used through both findmypast and 1911census when purchasing your credits. I went through findmypast with the code and had no problems, just remember to put the discount code in before you put your card details in.

If anyone wants another £ or so back then I went through a cashback site aswell to purchase the credits. Every little helps.

Does anyone know what happened to the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT, I have heard the 1921census will not be released until 2022

1921 census covered by the 100 year rule.

Accessing the 1921 Census
The 1921 census is closed until January 2022. The ruling by the Information Commissioner that resulted in the 1911 census being opened early does not apply to the 1921 census because, unlike the 1911 census, the 1921 census was conducted under the 1920 Census Act, which is still in force and which contains a statutory prohibition on disclosure.

Nevertheless, continuing challenges can be expected and there must be a very good chance that it will be available earlier than 2022.

But the freedom of information act has to respect the data protection rules and regulations. I personally would be annoyed if say the 2001 census was released early when promises are made that its 'sealed' for 100 years.

Although like miltary records I think its not unreasonable if very close family members could take an early look.

Also the freedom of informaiton act does not mean the data should be free, if you have ever requested information under this act they are allowed to charge a reasonable fee for the time and effort it takes to prepare and copy the information.

It now appears to be possible to make corrections to bad transcriptions on the 1911 when you use 10 credits to view a transcript !!

Thanks to Rambling Rose for the info. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back but I've been offline. I'm hoping because one of the surnames I am looking for is Pargiter, that it won't be too much trouble. My Hill family is going to be a different matter altogether!! Thanks to all.

I have been charged 30 credits for an error entry. 1911 says that the problem has been resolved and the image would be available in 48 hours. I am still waiting after four days.

Thought I wopuld give this a nudge for any newbies encouraged by 'Who do you think you are ' being on telly, to start looking :)
