Afternoon dea.
The plot thickens, Now that ancestry is back working again i have been able to veiw the images.
I see neither john,s were masons.

The only death i have found for a john prior to margarets marriage is of john in sunderland who died in 1906.

The fact that margaret was a worsted spinner in bradford is a plus point, but i suspect in that area at the time the cotton industry was a large employer.

The durkin link is a interesting one and we could do with pats opinion on that.

I will take one more look for any mistranscribed cencus,s.

I will also send pat another message to get her opinion on the possible durkin connection.

Hi everyone,

Firstly thanks to PaulaW - Yes did have a look on the Nazareth site - not in great detail, but at least I know where to find the info. Many thanks again.

Dea/Richard,

My Oh My!! - You're both too good for me! and way ahead!

I've had to print out the info, and at first glance to me, it's reading that a John McGlen married an Annie Durkin in 1881 - Is that the JMc that is father to my grandmother Margaret Philomena? I'm getting a bit confused, as she also married a Durkin - my grandfather James. I'm sorry if I seem a bit blank about it all but
the fact that the Durkin name has come up within the McGlenn/n's
family is making my little pea brain work overtime.!!!

Although I said I have info on the DURKINS it is only about my grandparents' children, and the names of grandfather's parents, As yet I haven't gone any further with that as i thought I would first find out my grandmother's maiden name and family, because I thought her name would be easier to follow rather than the Durkins.

I hope what I've written makes sense to you.

Hi Dea,

First thing this morning I spoke with Bradford Records and have asked them for Grandmother's Birth Certificate, either 1893 or 1888/89 25/12 as after last nights info I was getting confused. So hopefully that will arrive by Saturday, and will at least confirm her mother's name which should help trace the correct John. Even tho' I was unable to find her entry anywhere I just thought "what the hell" I need to try and make sure I'm going to go down the right road at the earliest chance.

After what you posted today I'm glad I did as I'm well and truly confused, would never have thought that someone from the McGlenn's would have married a Durkin earlier on!!

The certificates that I have at present are Birth, Death & Marriage for Grandfather James Durkin and Death & obviously marriage for Grandmother.

The mind boggles, as I haven't even really started on the grandfather and census for finding his siblings etc. But I'm sure that they'll be hundred of James Durkins.

No doubt I wouldn't be the first to mention this but how I wish I had asked questions before they had all gone!!

Anyway another thanks for all yours & Richards help I do appreciate it, I'm sure some people give up early on because of the hurdles they come up against, especially if they're new to this "hobby"

Pat.

Dea Report 13 Nov 2008 20:24

Yes,

It is really confusing, especially when you first start out and 'this family' you have started with is particularly complicated.

I will keep all the notes I have made to one side for now as any more postings will only confuse further.

As you have said - we need to have the birth cert of your grandmother. - Once we have proved that to be the correct one we can then start to piece things together.

Post on this thread when you get the cert and send me a pm in case I don't notice it - we can then get 'back on the case'

Dea x

P.S. - If it helps - I have already looked at the Durkins for you and from all the info I have now on the Mc Glen's, I think this is your biggest 'hurdle' - once we connect her to the correct line, I think things will be a lot easier for you BUT we have to make sure that first link is correct or your tree will never work.

Thanks Dea, will do that - I have myself, tonight spent some time looking at the Durkins, mainly just to have a break from the "others", at the minute looks promising!!!!

Speak again soon

PatB243 Report 14 Nov 2008 15:02

Hi Dea,

Have received copy of birth cert. - Not what I was expecting - different birthdate.

I telephoned Bradford records and they confirmed that they had only looked for 1888/1889, and that they will only look between 5 years - not the 6 that I asked for, even tho' I was told they would. Because I told them that all living members of family will confirm that her birthday was always know as being on Xmas Day they said they will have another look. I have to phone back on Monday and the lady there will have another look for Qtr 4 1893 & Qtr 1 1894 on my behalf. If not there she seems to think it must be this one and death cert dates could be wrong.

Here's the info:-

9/4/1888
Margaret Ann
Father: John McGlen (note only one "n")
Mother: Annie McGlen formely DURKIN
Father Occup: Stone Mason
Address: 20 Bower Street, Horton
Reg Distr: Bradford
Sub-Distr: Horton

Certainly inter-marriage within the family, I suppose until I find grandfathers' ('James D) siblings I shan't know exactly how close, will I?

What do you think?

Pat

Dea

Dea Report 14 Nov 2008 16:31

Hi,

For what it is worth I DO think this is the correct one!

I will need to look through my notes again and recheck the images.

That is the cert for the birth ref. I originally put up - she has the correct parents and he IS a stone mason.

I will dig out my notes and come back to you.

Hi pat that was a quick cert return.
I checked the address in 1891 to see whether the family had been mistranscribed, but they were not living 20 bower street. A family called brayshaw were living there.

I have to agree with dea, my only concern is that john in 1891 is a shipyard labourer.

Where & when was james D born.

richard.

Sorry forgot to add the reason i post margarets possible siblings marriages was to use as a cross reference.
It maybe worth getting winifreds marriage certificate.

PatB243 Report 14 Nov 2008 17:21

Richard,

According to Birth Cert. I have James D was born October 1888 - 73 Chassum St, Manningham, Bradford, His father, also James was a Mason's Labourer. Mother called Mary Durkin Nee Mullarkey.

In 1891 Census there is an entry for a James Durkin at 73 Chassereau St, Manningham - I thought this was more than likely the same one because of the condition of the transcription, no mention of my grandfather being there tho'.

Do you think I have the wrong James Durkin to start with?? - Oh my dear! i.e wrong flippin b.cert.?

I was told by my brother that he thought the grandfather's birthday was 21/12 (which is same date as his son).

Pat

ps hope I'm not confusing you too much with this? Me - confusion my middle name!!

Hi Dea,

Reference Margaret McGlenn/n I spoke with Bradford Records again late this morning and the lady there confirmed that she had looked under qtr 4 1893 & qtr 1 1894 and could find nothing whatsoever. You were obviously right and I thank you for that. Makes you realise that loads of little fibs were told by many over the years eh! all these years we thought she was a Xmas day baby!

Also, I have now asked them for the marriage certificate of her parents John McGlen and Annie Durkin, which I hope will give me some idea how closely they were all related.

I hope that I find it easier to find out siblings of James Durkin's (Grandfather).

Just a couple of small questions:- after reading a few threads, people are talking about "nudging" what does that mean? Is there anyway I can find out who lives at a specific address, without having a surname to use?

Hi Pat, nudging just means adding something to the thread (like this little message) which nudges it up to the top of the page.

A full stop in the reply box would do the same job, but most people type something like nudge or bump. Its just a way of keeping the thread near the top rather than it going a few pages down the line as newer threads come along.

Dea

Dea Report 17 Nov 2008 15:34

Hi Pat,

Heather has given you info about 'nudging' above.

With regard to searching by address - some sites allow you to do this - I think 'findmypast' allows you to do it on several census, - Ancestry and family search have the facility only on 1881.

Was there somewhere specific you were looking for?

PatB243

PatB243 Report 17 Nov 2008 17:01

Hi Dea,

Thanks for replying. No specific reason at present, it was because Richard sais that he'd checked the address shown on my grandmothers birth certif. "20 Bower Str" in 1891 and said another family lived there. (See earlier thread), I wondered how he found that out, as he obviously wouldn't have know the name of the occupiers to trace it through the census.

Pat

ps Thanks Heather for your input.

pps Very many thanks for everyone's help - would like to say you won't hear from me again - but I know I'd be telling fibs!! Unfortuntely god didn't pass on a great deal of patience to me so that doesn't help, especially even after taking a break from searching, i still end up not seeing the "wood for the trees"

Dea

Dea Report 17 Nov 2008 18:31

Well,at least you seem to be able to get your certs VERY quickly (I don't know how you do it) - SO, we shouldn't have long to wait until we can look further!!
