HI all,
I need some help in trying to find my Great Great Grandfather, William T Chapman.
I am not sure where he was born, some say Salford Manchester.
We know that he was born in 1869. Served in the Royal Navy, lived for a time in Sheerness, was married & had 2 Daughters, Mary & Ellen.
He also had a sister who's nickname was Ninny, plus 2 borther Reginald & Peter.
He did come to live in Salford, & when his 1st wife died, he married Lillian Rowlands, they had 1 child a dughter called Rita.
Any help would be much appreciated.
TIA

Have you got his marriage certificate with his father's name on it?

Flick Report 29 Apr 2011 21:05

His birthplace will be recorded on censuses........have you checked 1881, which is free?

Some dates would be helpful..........

No I haven't , thats where I'm stuck.
I remember my Gr Gr Grandad as I was 11 when he died in Dec 1962.
There is a lot of confusion in the family as to his exact place of birth.
However, he did have an unusual middle name=Tranter.
MY Aunt, his daughter Mary's daughter is still alive, & she says her mother & my Gran Ellen were born in Sheerness. As he served in the Royal Navy for a long time, we can only assume he lived there as a posting.
There is also some additonal information I have been researching with zero results.
He was supposed to be living in a house owned by an Admiral in the navy, and his sister & brothers worked in this house as a maid & servants.
There is another story that he served on the Lusitania when it was torpedoed of the coast of Ireland in 1915. Again I cannot find any information about this.
He was by all accounts a stoker in the Royal & merchant navies.
Again, even with all this information I'm getting no results anywhere.
BTW
thanks for your response.

Get the cert of the marriage as posted above, for info about his father (if he knew him)

His marriage to Lillian Rowlands was Jun 1933 I have that info, again there is confusion with the surnames of the Rowland(S) family.I have BMD records for most of the family and the spelling of the surname is different on most of the records although I know 100% the records are correct.
I know factually thatn he did serve in the RN as when I was very young he gave me the ribbon off his cap which I unfortunately lost.
With regard to the uncertainty of the spelling of names, Lillian Rowland(s) was my Great Aunt, I never met her as she died following pneumonia in the late 40's early 50's.
I do appreciate any help as this problem is haunting me, I have msot of the records for other family members except William Chapman's
Regards

Rita Chapman birth 1936 is correct, but I have an entry also with her middle name as Travis.
Again confusion as that is my first name.

I've tried confused.com but they can't help me:-}
