Oh dear, here am I, another sheep bleating.
Damned if I do, damned if I do not.

I have only 'complained' once, I think, by adding on to someone else's thread. At the moment I am getting very few errors, and they are usually solved by hitting back a few times.
However, unless I was in contact with several dozen people, all over the country, using a variety of different computers/systems/operating or otherwise/windows/linux/apple/Outer hebrides/down the wires/over the air/whatever you can think of, I would not claim that everything was OK.
If all other sites that I am using work beautifully, and this does not, then I am justified in assuming that genes is at fault.

My suggestion is for more openness and understanding, please.

I'm sure it is only a minority of members who are posting openly about problems

and that is because .........................

The vast majority of members do not know about the Community Boards

................ and most of them wouldn't be able to post even if they did know about them .......... that's because the majority of members are possibly/probably free members who could read but not post on the boards.

If they are having problems, they're probably just grumbling away to themselves, think it is their computer's fault, and/or quitting the site.

IF they do complain to GR, we can guess the response they are getting ......... which basically seems to put the onus back on the member's server, program used, etc.

IF they are like me ................... they will be unable to contact GR through this site, because my server will not allow any communication with GR

................... and they may not know about the url for contacting support@genesreunited.

AND ................ if they try to use that url using their server, then they will still not get through becuase their server will not allow it.

I'm sure that not many of them will do what I myself, and a couple of other people, have done .......... set up another email account which will connect with GR

(and YES, Phil is supposed to be trying to work out why this is happening. Haven't heard a word from him about it for the last 2 or 3 weeks).

so .................... I think all you can say, IGP, is that a minority of people who know about and use the Community Boards are vocal enough to complain.

You cannot make a broad statement such as the one that you have posted.

As for the fact that you are not experiencing any problems

.............. take the good luck, run with it, but PLEASE do NOT keep on telling the rest of us that we are wrong, or imply that we are idiots who don't know what we are doing.

That's offensive!

Perhaps the majority of members can not be bothered making a complaint

"This board is for you to add your suggestions for changes you would like to see made to Genes Reunited. We will be unable to respond to each post individually, but we will be checking the suggestions regularly and taking your suggestions on board."

I thought I was making a suggestion. They should sort out the problems before they start altering how the boards actually look

"PLEASE can someone tell me why only a tiny minority of members are having problems?"

- it may not be a minority; only a minority of members post or even view the boards, so we posters cannot ascertain whether it is a minority or a majority of members that have suffered from the site's issues over the last several months, only the site's staff would know that ;-)

PLEASE can someone tell me why only a tiny minority of members are having problems?

I use the site extensively most days and haven't seen a blip for several days, nor has anyone else I have been in contact with. So, tell me why this is?

AND why keep bleating on the Suggestions Board? Support Staff don't read it as has been stated on several occasions by GR Staff.....!

This board is for you to add your suggestions for CHANGES you would like to see made to Genes Reunited. We will be unable to respond to each post individually, but we will be checking the suggestions regularly and taking your suggestions on board.

Hit the submit button and the reply is showing twice. So you have to go and delete one of them

It is ridiculous!

I just clicked on a thread on General Chat and ended up on the Find Living Relatives Board - tried it 4 times and still the same result.

Also, clicking on Find Ancestors and Genealogy Chat, still getting just someone's avatar in the top left hand corner - nothing else!

Edit - after I posted this onto the board I noticed that my avatar is not mine???

Whose got my glow in the dark cat!!!!!

3 errors in 1 minute, or maybe 2 minutes.

Ghouls etc are just allowed out for that one night of the year, just the one, no more ;-)

It IS coming up to Hallowe'en

Thanks, Flowerpot2.

I can't think whose avatar it is at the moment but it is the squirrel-looking one with the hardhat and the big gun!!!

I am trying to use this site at the moment - can only get onto a couple of boards apart from this one - General Chat and Success Stories (how ironic).

When I try to get onto the Genealogy Chat board all I get is an avatar in the top left hand corner - I can't think whose avatar it is at the moment but it is the squirrel-looking one with the hardhat and the big gun!!!

Why on earth is it doing that????? Weird!!

""Far better to manage damage limitation and keep the site up and running."
- it was not running nor anything else."

So, the site was not up and running yesterday? If that was the case, perhaps someone could explain to me why I was able to use it throughout yesterday without too much difficulty, apart from the occasional timeout message?

That sounds like very good damage limitation to me.

As per update to Announcement,

UPDATE **********
We have rolled out some changes late this afternoon 6PM UK time, and the site appears to be more stable. We are still seeing the odd error occur, but not in the volumes they have been the last few days. We hope to make some more changes tomorrow to improve on this.
Phil Moir, Lead Developer, Genes Reunited.
********************

We did look at switching off some options today, but this usually involves a full release, and the errors we experienced were occurring randomly all over, from home page, to boards, to messages, etc. I am sure you are all aware of this. Things appear to be calm again BUT NOT FIXED. We will continue to look at solutions tomorrow. We have some new ideas on the cause to investigate. As always I will post an update on these boards.

Our apologies for the ALL the inconvenience this has caused everyone.
Phil
