Errol

If you are about. I managed to do a system restore in the end. Norton was stopping it originally as I couldn't do it. After completing a restore, I got my folders and icons back, but the folders were empty. Seems like it was image files that went, census and photos etc., but why some and not others, I don't know.
I tried searching, but couldn't find anything, so don't know if they are lost forever.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Sadly, yes it can.
Certain types of virus, particularly older ones, wipe images. These days that is less likely to be the case - the point of a virus now tends to be to do things such as turn your computer into a so-called zombie (one that is used remotely for sending out spam).
But let's not panic too much yet - I am trying to think of a work-around to get your folders back.

I will run a virus scan tomorrow

I did a couple of searches for names that were in those folders and nothing showed up.

One things just occurred to me - do you use your external drive to back-up?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 4 Dec 2007 23:31

Jenny you can get some of Vista to run very much like XP, you know.

Thanks for your reply Errol. I have only been using a PC for 5yrs. Started with a Desk Top XP, then got my Laptop XP and have just got another DT Vista. Cannot stand Vista, probably cause I just only know XP.

Luckily I have never experienced a bad virus, worm or anything bad. Fingers crossed.

But I have always found System Restore very helpful when I have probs after installing/unistalling different program/sofware.

Jenny.

A couple of the images say they can't be found, but can' t remember wher I saved them to or I could have deleted them anyway.

no - it needs to be an image that may have disappeared from your desktop

Susan

Susan Report 4 Dec 2007 23:05

yes the images I last created appeared, but as I said they are in a folder which didn't disappear.

Jenny, System Restore is seen as a catch all and people often use it because they believe it will get rid of a virus, malware etc. However, it quite simply does not work in many cases. It may APPEAR to roll your computer back to a previous state but very often the problem is still lurking. System Restore is useful when installing new software if problems occur but for other problems it quite simply is not the answer.

Open Paint from your Start menu and then click on the File menu in Paint and see if the image you viewed is listed there.

Hi Errol, I understand you are very good with IT or whatever its called, you have helped me in the past. But need to ask why you are against System Restore.
It would have been the first thing that I and many others would have done.
Can you explain why you think SR is not a good thing to do in this case please?
