NO!!!! Why should us smokers have to stop! Why dont they just have some pubs that dont allow it and some that do! The same with restaraunts and certain areas! x

I smoke but not during the day and not at work (not 100% happy with nipping of for fags when non-smokers don't). However, I work in a pub a couple of nights a week and the majority of drinkers in there smoke, as does the landlady. So if/when such a law comes into place it'll be ignored in many ways. We will probably have a room out the back where people can smoke to their hearts content.

ive suggested this on another thread before but i have the solution. ban smoking in england and scotland but let them smoke in wales. that way all the smokers have their own smelly country to live in! see, easy!

If Governments REALLY DID CARE (which they don't) they would have come up with a better way to prevent youth starting the habit in the first place (prevention is better than cure). People like me who are hooked on the weed would buy them in only licensed places like the way you buy drink. Some people wouldnt like that but if tobacco is so bad for you (we know it is)and the people with the habit are becoming more and more alienated then why not. Here you can only buy drink in Off Licenses and Pubs, Supermarkets have an Off License detatched away from the rest of the Shop. I find it very annoying that Cigarettes are still sold in sweet shops/newsagents and there always has been people behind these counters who will sell them to the young, if I had not been allowed to buy cigarettes at 12 years old(in those days 1 or 2 at a time), I wouldnt be a smoker today. It feels like they do not want to make it difficult to buy the product because of all the tax it generates. Oh and I never smoked in Restaurants, I like clean buses and trains, but do miss not being able to smoke while having a drink. Well that's my thoughts anyway. Pat x

Steph You dont have to stop smoking, some places will allow it as long as its not where food is consumed/bought. IE: If a pub has an ajoining resturant, smoking will be banned, but if the resturant part has its own door/enterance smoking is allowed (I think) E x

I think that in order to give a real choice there should be smoking and non-smoking pubs. There should be a sign on the door and people could then choose to go and smoke or not and people could choose whether or not to work there. Linda - I hope you win the lottery! Jack

Bec Report 16 Nov 2004 15:33

Why not have non-smoking/smoking rooms? Ultimately EVERYONE has a choice. I was in the pub last weekend in the pool (of the game not wet variety!) room. There were 14 smokers and 2 non-smokers in there and one of the non-smokers just went mad, threw his pool cue and stormed off because when he had started lecturing the smokers on how they were going to die they ignored him and carried on smoking anyway. Some people don't like it when people drink - simple solution don't go into pubs where people will be drinking. Some people don't like people eating animals - only dine out in vegetarian restaurants. We all have choice.

Bec Report 16 Nov 2004 15:37

I felt like giving him a whack but instead I composed myself. If he was that upset about it he should buy his own pub and make it a non-smoking establishment...oh no I forgot if he did that he'd have next to no customers! pillock! becx

As a non smoker, I have to say I think this is brilliant. Noone can persuade me that "smoking sections" work. Smoke drifts you know ! Why should non smokers have to put up with breathing in smokey air if they fancy going to the pub ? Having been to Dublin, where there's a non smoking policy, and New York (ditto), I can confidently say that it works brilliantly. Everyone has a great time (even the smokers), the smokers go and huddle in their little groups outside when they need a fix. The pubs generally see an INCREASE in customers, as all those that had previously not gone as they didn't want to come home stinking of smoke now feel more comfortable with going out. At the end of the day, we all know smoking is bad for us. Those that do it... fine, harm yourself, just don't do it near us (which means not in public) ! The sooner the ban comes in the better.

Pat

Pat Report 16 Nov 2004 15:39

Over here there in NO CHOICE you are not allowed to smoke in ANY public place except the street and in your own home. I object to that strongly.as I said in my last thread the Government DOES NOT CARE and does not try constructively to STOP others picking up this anti social habit, if they did I would not mind the BIG BROTHER attitude of theirs. I hope you do have a bit more choice than we do. Pat x

OK, I'm not in favour of smoking in restaurants. In fact just the other weekend I was staying in an hotel and in the dining area, the smoking section was smack bang next to the buffet style breakfast area, where cooked food such as bacon and sausages were to be found. I'd be happy to see that eliminated. As for pubs, all that will probably happen is that pubs that serve food will probably stop doing so and become solely pubs or restaurants will become separate entities.

Bec

Bec Report 16 Nov 2004 15:59

Andy - Or pubs will just separate the buildings and have a restaurant and a main public bar! They'll probably be loopholes!
