Hi Bec! I was meant to be Naomi but when my mam had gone into hospital my dad had been watching the gymnastics on TV. He saw a girl called Natalia and thought it was nice so mentioned it to my mam and she loved it. Pretty mad that I ended up a gymnast. My middle name is Rose after my dads aunt who died in the summer before I was born. She was a lovely lady apparantly so I am happy to be her namesake. Mark is Mark cos his mam wanted him to be Simon and his dad said NO as he would end up being called simple. hehe. So he's Mark Simon. Still simple in my eyes though!!

my hubby was given his name after his dad, as he was number 5 child and his parents decided to get married just before he was born, since found traditional scots call third son after the husband, together they had two sons and two daughters prior to getting married, and all names began with an S,dunno why, we then discovered hubbys dad had two other sons in previous marriage, which may have been named after grandfathers, hense hubby given his fathers name, well its clear in my head anyway,

The Bag

The Bag Report 25 Sep 2005 16:07

I was 'born' an Anne which Mum and dad would have kept apparently, but i had a cousin Ann and they thought it too much the same. Dad apparently wanted me to be called Debby - thank goodness mothers determined streak ran true. My first name i still dont like very much, so i'll stick with my second - thank you. My brother got saddeled with mums maiden name as a second name - and he hated that too. (i'd have called mine Eleanor Ruth and a Lawrence Frederick had the 'big plan ' worked). jess x

My mother gave me my first name as she liked it and wanted a break from allthe same family names then family tradition took over Howardxx

Tammy

Tammy Report 25 Sep 2005 16:50

My parents named me Tammy after a song from a film at the time (1968) with Debbie Reynolds in. I never liked it much and got alot of stick at school but what can you do!! lol My brother's got off lightly with Richard (after Dad) and Lee (because it couldn't be shortened). I have considered changing it but nothing suits me!! Tammy

Nana Anna

Nana Anna Report 25 Sep 2005 16:55

I was given the name Annabel as I had a one syllable maiden name. My Mum decided my brother and sister should all have three syllable christian names. But everyone shortens it to Anna anyway!

we gave our son the same first name as dads middle name, purely by coincidence, which now follows tradition again, it was going to be sons middle name , as his first was after a mountain in falklands , ( dont laugh its a sensible name,) but we changed um round so the mountains his middle name,

I spent all my school years being called Dreary Ditchwater! Then I foolishly wed a Mr. Lally.... so am now D(o) Lally! Grrrrrrr Dee x

Chris in Sussex

Chris in Sussex Report 25 Sep 2005 17:10

I asked my Mum and Dad (now in their seventies) why I was named Christine and my younger sister Jaqueline........ Answer: They liked them!!!! Next question....Why was I given a second name Susan and Jaqueline (Now universally known as Jackie) none? Answer: Jackie would probably have enough problems learning to spell it without an additional name!!!! Funnily enough the only people to use my full name of Christine are my parents, and then only when talking about me to people who don't me, to show I am female. Chris :))))

Jeanie

Jeanie Report 25 Sep 2005 17:17

My mother is Scottish so I was names after her mother Jeanie McDougall Brewerton. I still get people saying 'Don't you mean Jean?' or 'Isn't that rather childish?' If I had been named after my fathers mother I would have been Ethel Wilkes Brewerton, so it was a bit of an escape!!

I was apparently going to be Belinda Kaye, but my Father preferred it the other way around. He also decided to put the 'e' on the end of Kay - just because he thought it looked nicer! Kaye x

I forgive you Vivienne...but how I would have liked a name like yours - or Madeleine - or any name remotely pleasant!! I suppose the only good thing about it is my christian and maiden names are quite a unique combination, and people on Friends Reunited instantly remember me! 'Spose it'll come in handy for any future family historian to track me too! Another problem was my initials - in my secretarial days it was the practice to reference a letter with the typists intials followed by a slash and the initials of the person whom the letter was from. My initials (my middle name is Ann) were therefore DAF. On those occasions when I made some typographical error on a letter, my boss would send the thing back for retyping with a flippin great T inked in after my intials!! Perhaps we should start another thread, on the subject of what do your initials spell out??? Dee x

Susan Louise - Susan because they believed neither side of the family could claim it as 'their' family name and Louise after an intrepid Frenchwoman they knew! Since researching my family tree I've discovered that Susan and Susannah appear in every family of every generation on my paternal grandmother's side since at least 1670. So they got that one wrong didn't they? Really like the idea of living up to the intrepid Frenchwoman though! Daisy (whose name, for those of you who didn't know it, is not Daisy! lol)

Hi Bec - interesting question! My birth name was Suzanne, a name which I like. However, because birth mother didn't want to keep me, she didn't bother giving me a middle name. Adoptive parents were encouraged to choose new names - new start etc - and I actually agree with that. I was then called Mandy Denise. Was going to be Amanda Jane but Mum thought that Amanda would get shortened to Mandy anyway, and my grandma said that my Dad should get to choose a name lol. So he chose Denise which sort of went better with Mandy than Amanda. Now guess what? Yep - Mandy often gets lengthened to Amanda!! Mandy :) xx

My mother wanted to call me Angela until she found out that every other baby in the maternity hospital was called Angela. So she decided on Jessica, which my father didn't like. She also wasn't sure about it being shortened to Jessy. So my dad chose Helen and my middle name, Ruth, was after my mum, although it was also my dad's grandmother's name. They thought Helen was a good name and not very popular, though as you can see on these boards there are lots of Helens. I once worked in an office with 3 other Helens. As I had started there first I was called Helen and the others all had nicknames! nell
