I see Karen thanks was wondering what you meant. Well I think it is very valid we have been on about this sort of thing for a longtime. Newbies may not realise how easy it is to gain the info. But long time members make the same mistakes often. I think most of us that have been here a longtime have seen people type their email address or even phone numbers. It is really emphasising what is written at the bottom of this and the other boards:- 'We would encourage you to think carefully before posting personal details on any of the public areas of our site. If you post your telephone number or address you should be aware that this instantly becomes available to everyone who views it. Please do take care.' Pat x

Sadly tho Pat, its a lot more simple than that!!! If i was soo naive again i could i could call myself eg: Bella Bloggs from Berwick...... and carry on with this name forever!!! Now this name (if real) could be traceable on said site!!! Karen

It really is scary how much info can be found just sitting here pressing a few keys. I just found my brothers old addy and postcode on that site, then could go to another and see how much is house sold for..........I REALLY wasn't being nosey....honest, but just tried it to see how much info is available on the web. Think we should all be a bit more cautious! BTW Lucia, yes I found your addy no probs! Christine

It is a bit scary, but personally I don't care if everyone knows my details. I know that sounds really stupid lol Lucia :-)

When I 1st got a PC many moons ago and joined the chat room world. I was single and very lonely. One guy started to chat to me and i found myself looking n waiting for him to log on..(know the feeling girls?) On only our 2nd chat date he started giving me directions to go meet him in a laybye about 20miles away from my house... He said....go out your back door, turn right...now follow the road all the way around to the left, straight ahead on the next roundabout......blah blah blah..... When he led me to the laybye20 miles away (on here) he said.... 'NOW! young lady! beware! and thank your lucky stars that you spoke to me and not a chat room perve!' ((Like someone said earlier on this thread, Others see these messages that are non members.)) Your lucky Im your friend cos I found out where you lived by chatting to you for only a couple of minits. He also told me to change my hotmail address.(this used to give my full name at hotmale dotty commy) I see this so many times on this site and it scares me.! Please be aware girls and be careful. Gerri in Aunty mode xxxx

Pat Report 23 Nov 2005 00:45

Hi Gerri lovely to see you :-) Thank you for that as people sometimes need a reminder or to be warned. Lucia why would you not care about people knowing where you live? We are not talking Christine,Gerri Karen Linda or me or others on general board we are talking people you have never even spoken to here, people you have never had anything to do with. Please take care & take advice it is in your best interest it is given, not to scare monger just for your safety. I don't see that as a laughing matter. Pat x

Hi Lucia, Well you know I'm old like Gerri & some others Christine & Karen are catching up lol. No you have to protect yourself as much as you can while using message boards, chat boards and any sites on the internet I am sure you know that, I would think you know it is not advisable to let people know too much of your personal details, especially when you are not dealing one to one with someone, you know who they are. On here there are probably more reading these boards than contribute to them, they are the ones you never know about, that's when it becomes even more scary. Pat x

Hi Pat me darlin :)))) If only we could put old heads on young shoulders...yes? I'm so very tempted to e.mail GR and inform them of the dangers of allowing non members to read these boards. Our members seem to think they are safe cos they have paid membership fees...they are NOT! but... Does anyone ever get a response from GR? will I be wasting my time? Is money more important to GR than human lives? I crawl back in my cage :((( Gerri x

Pat Report 23 Nov 2005 01:12

LOL Gerri I have had many responses to my emails amongst them very good responses but also I have had responses that were really a waste of time :-( The warning should be at the top of this message board not at the bottom. The policy of allowing non members to read the boards will not change yes it would be for commercial reasons, I think it is very unfair, people who are non members could read the topics but when clicking to read the responses they should be blocked so that only paying members could read all. I have said it over and over again I dislike the fact that non members, ex. members booted members and uncle tom cobberly and all can read all we write. It is wrong and unfair on us paying members, I would rather pay a little more to have a safer site. Pat x
