I most definitely do believe in God. The argument against religion that is so often used – that so many wars have been fought in its name – is very weak. Wars have been fought in the name of all religions and none. Some wars have been justified – the problem in WW2 was that war wasn’t joined sooner by the allies. Elaine says - quite rightly - that “the bible holds a good set of rules that if we use makes us better people”. The problem is that we don’t use them. Jesus was even more radical than the 10 commandments. In response to ‘You shall murder’ Jesus agreed with it and then said, ‘But I say to you that if you have hatred in your heart then you are committing murder’ [I have given the sense of what he said rather than an actual quote]. None of us are good enough for God – He is perfect and demands perfection. Whether we like that or not has nothing at all to do with it. William |

I believe in God, He's very important to me, in fact a friend. I became a Christian as a child, and it was the most important decision of my life. Anne |

A 'faith' that gives a nice cosy feeling is not a faith. A faith has to be IN someone or something. I have faith IN the chair underneath me - that it will continue to keep me up. I have faith IN Jesus Christ - that he will stand beside me when I face God, and that he will acknowledge my love for him and his love for me - best shown when he died so that I wouldn't have to take the necessary punishment for my sins. Faith alone is a waste of time. Faith in faith is slightly cleverer...but still - what is the faith IN? Or do people sit in mid-air having faith that they will stay up? William |

There must be something. Having spent the last moments with many patients (more nurses will tell you) the calm at the end of someones life .. those final moments..no matter how much pain.. I am not religious but have experienced a final calm.. Cannot explain, just experienced. I would like to believe. Grayx |

Their are no atheists in a lifeboat. At some time or other, or at moments when we have exhausted every human resource, most if not all of us turn to prayer. When we can't possibly know what the future holds, we bring into the equation someone who we think might do: God. For some of us this God is in the equation all the time and for many of us this god is available only when needed. This then brings into the eqation as to how much faith one has in his belief - not so much from me I'm afraid - but I do pray!!!!!!!! |

No! There are moral codes to be adhered to that are important in everyday life. I hate the idea that heaven has no animals, that would be my idea of Hell! Louise |

Well said William. People who do not beleive in god are so entitled to have that opinion. I would ask one question which shows up on this board almost daily. 'Please give positive thoughts .....etc.' I would ask who gives you the power to think positive thoughts . Maybe you think it isjust a saying and agree to think positive. The real answer lies in the result of this positive thinking. Do we really beleive that we as mere mortals can make some one well from a serious illness. If someone whom the doctors have done all they can but still remains close to death survives it cant be through positive thinking because i see names that do not beleive in a god Positive thinking is really saying a prayer. Who is the being that answers that prayer? God. Rupert |
