If you are serious about losing the weight, I can highly recommend Slimming World. I've lost 2 1/2 stone in 18 months. Actually losing the weight is the easy bit if you stick with it. The hardest bit is keeping it off after. It has to become a new way of eating. Good luck what ever you decide to do. PP xx

The Ego

The Ego Report 9 Jul 2006 20:16

errrmm whoever said their husband is 6ft 2 and 8 and a half stone-even if you were skinny, thats a physical impossibility.......a skinny bloke that height would be 10st (and i mean skinny) a fit athletic man of average build would be 12stone 8lb-13st 2lb,and even someone like me who doesnt even look overweight and not big framed is 15 st 9lb and 6ft 3'..........if your husband is 8stone he should be in hospital on a drip !!

The Ego

The Ego Report 9 Jul 2006 20:23

That BMI calculator system is total nonsense because it doesnt consider skeletal build.......which is a big factor or fat percentage.....a good example of this was having Tommy the Builder on that fat Club programme, supposedly obese-he was obviously a big framed bloke who led an active life and looked very healthy, and is probably fitter than most--

The Ego

The Ego Report 9 Jul 2006 20:28

Ive scored 28.0 which is the higher end of overweight-if you saw me you would look very puzzled.........I am a bit out of condition, that is all, and you wouldnt even call me average build. If i was to get in the middle of the normal range I would have to lose 20 kilogrammes.....thats almost a bag of cement....i think Id have to hand over a few ribs to the Doctor aswell,to make that weight loss........thats 20 bags of sugar !!!.......

The Slimming World method really consists of not mixing protein and carbohydrates. There's loads of what they term 'free food' which is your veg, fruit, salad etc. Days are split between red and green. Red - you can eat as much lean meat as you can manage with salad and veg, but only very small amounts of potato/rice/pasta. Green - eat as much potato/pasta/rice again with the salad and veg, but only small amounts of meat. I personally used the green days mainly, having Quorn as a meat substitute in things like spag bol, cottage pie, sweet and sour etc. Bread must be limited as well. Wholemeal bred is the recommended type, and you can have 3 slices a day from a 400 gram loaf. Obviously cakes/biscuits etc are really no go areas although they can be used as 'syns'. Try to use skimmed milk wherever possible. There was a thread at one time for recipes for Slimming World. I'll see if I can find it, and give it a nudge. You will be amazed how much you can eat and still lose weight. It's designed to lose between 1-2lbs a week, but the first couple of weeks is generally more than that. Good luck. PP xx

The Weight/BMI theory has been discredited as no account is taken of muscle (and the bone to support it) being much heavier than fat. Many heavy super-athletes, including Lennox Lewis, and Jonah Lomu (the rugby player) who at 19stone of bone and muscle would be classified under the system as obese and unfit for the military services whereas the services would be more than glad to have such people. There is no such thing as an ideal weight for a given height. Each person should be separately medically assessed . You are probably healthier and more robust than Victoria Beckham and, very likely, more cuddly. len

Len of the Chilterns Report 9 Jul 2006 21:46

I am 5ft 8in. and weigh 10 stone (140lb). That's what I weighed when I was called up into the army. 4 years later, able to run 10 miles with 60lb kit, I weighed 12st. 3lb (171lb). I was never fat but, under the bodymass/weight index I would have been classed as unfit. An utter nonsense. Early during those 4 years, I had to go on a 3-week training stint (a battle course) with the Welsh Guards unit at Whitewebs Park. I have never been so physically exhausted before or since and it is the only time in my life when I have been too tired to remove my boots before getting into bed fully clothed. Over those 3 weeks, I put on 9lb. Len Ps. Wish I still had that 42lb of muscle. Can't remember how I lost it.
