I have found Alice, thank you for your help. Can you tell me how I now find out where she was Christened? Would there be any such records? My local records office perhaps? Annie

Can anyone please tell me what do (I think it is) is on census records?

Sandra

Hello Annie..... 'Do' on census records simply means 'ditto'.The same surname as the last recorded one. Sandra. xxx

Hi Annie, I can't work out which church it is but I'll put up a request to see if anyone can help. However, there is a brother for Annie Alice christened at the same church in 1875: Thomas Walter Wright son of Henry and Matilda. Janice

Thank you You are teaching me a lot actually because I am trailing behind you trying to find what you are seeing - can you tell me how you found the brother? what do I look under? And how on earth would you even know where to look for the church? Anniex

Is this the right place for me to be posting to? A lady helped me track down my granddfather's brother when I was doing it before - he was Charles Thomas Clark born 18th March 1897 and he went to South Africa - he died there 18th March 1973 - such a shame I didn't get in touch and do this all those years ago - but hey I was only in my teens! But I have an address of where it says he was resident during the 12 months prior to his death it says Berea Road Masonic Temple, Durban, place of death St. Augustine's Hospital. His surviving spouse was/is Euphemia Clark born Falconer. What advise would you give me to get in touch with the family - how would I trace them now - and why do you think he was at the Masonic Temple - what on earth is that! Annie - oh and they were married in Durban on 27th December 1919.

Hi Annie, If you go to FamilySearch click on the search tab at the top of the 1st page then in the boxes put Henry Wright and Matilda as parents' names; leave everything else blank. Click on search and it will bring up baptisms of anyone who has a Henry and Matilda Wright as parents. Pick out the 2 Southampton ones. The dates are close enough to assume they are siblings. Janice PS If you google Hugh wallis numbers then track your way through England, Hampshire, Southampton, you will see the numbers but there isn't one that matches the one on the christening entry. It is included in the one with ** which means several locations together so not much help.

Hi again, Posted before I read your next bit. Why don't you put a request on the tips board asking if anyone can help with the Durban stuff. Where was Charles Thomas (and any others) in 1901, do you know? Janice

Annie Report 12 Nov 2006 15:09

Thanks Janice, What is Hughs Wallis? I must of found him before when I was doing it - as I just have a scibbled note saying he was 4 years old in 1901 - the children were scattered - I don't think Charlie was living with his parents as they were in Northumberland (with Isable who died). My granddad was born 1909 - and I think granddad said they went to live with a lady called ;Granny Dunn who I have a death certificate for and her name on it is Annie Jane Dunn - this was her second marriage - his name was Edwin John Dunn - her first husband died. It gets even more complicated Janice - Granddad doesn't know what the connection was between granny dunn and the family - but I seem to remember that maybe she was a sister of his mother Annie Alice Clark.... Gosh I have to get my head round all of this - I better start making notes or I'll loose the thread again.. I'll do what you say Janice and put a post on the other board..if I can find out how to do a new one. Annie

How old was Granny Annie when she died? What year did she die? Any idea when she married Mr Dunn?

Annie

Annie Report 12 Nov 2006 15:25

Janice, I've got Granny Annie.. died in 1947 and was 86 years old. I haven't got a marriage Cert for Edwin John Dunn and Annie or any details - but it does say his name on her death cert and she was his wife? they were living at Lowlyn (house name), Bridge Road, Bursledon. And, it was my granddfather who was the informant - so he must have been 38 years old I think when she died. Annie x

Janice, I've actually seen Granny Annie's grave, when mum was alive she showed it to me - it's in St. Leonards Church, Bursledon just near me. Annie

Just found something I must have extracted last time... 1901 census record It says a Annie James (who granddad thinks was her previous married name) - he said he previous husband work on the railways and it says Railway Locomotive Driver..... It also says there was a granddson called Charles Clark... and he was aged 4 years, so this must be where I got it from.. And, why weren't the children with the mother - the record we found was that she and James Clark were in Northumberland weren't they - they were Music Hall Artists so I suppose they travelled and the other children couldn't go with them or something? And then when granddad was born 1909 - the mother Annie Alice Clark died in 1911 so he never knew his mum... Then I suppose Granny Annie took the children - or granddad over - do you think they would have adopted him properly? But it's making the connection between them? Annie

Thomas Walter Wright married Annie Elizabeth Bartlett in Southampton in 1896 In 1901 they have 2 children, cousins for your granddad, Thomas aged 4 Annie G aged 2 Address 56 Northam St, St Mary, Southampton Thomas was a labourer at the shipyard.

wow, I'll just go and ask him... were they his mothers brother or sister is that where they are connected Janice? My head is spinning as there are so many to look up! I thought I would just follow one person slowly but you need lots of info just to piece it all together. I think if we could find out what Granny Annie's maiden name was before she married Edwin J Dunn, (James from previous marriage) and the first marriage - it would shed some light as to what her connection was as well... Annie

Janice

Janice Report 12 Nov 2006 16:35

Thomas Walter is Annie Alice's brother. I'm working on the Dunn marriage now. Janice

Annie Report 12 Nov 2006 16:41

Yes Janice he remembers his Uncle.. that's great isn't it! I've got to put something on the board for help with finding his Dad - he says he would love to know what happened to him.... he doesn't realise bless him how much time it all takes... but I do love it - especially as I can ask him still.. He's got all his marbles... Annie thank you x

Annie

Annie Report 12 Nov 2006 16:42

by the way Janice, Granddad didn't like Edwin John Dunn - he reckoned he wasted all of Granny Dunns money.... when John Dunn died they came to granddad for the money to bury him - he went to the insurers he says to get the money - but they wouldn't give it to him because he wasn't legally adopted. But I would like to strip Granny Dunn of her married names and find out who she was? Anniex

Janice

Janice Report 12 Nov 2006 17:13

OK. Found it. Edwin John Dunn married Annie J James June quarter 1916 Southampton 2c 134 If you buy the cert, you'll get her previous name and her father's name which could link her in with the rest of the family (or not!!)
