My paternal grandfather was a Shipwright, as were the 3 (at least) generations before him, all the boys in the family were. He had an accident at work where he damaged some ribs and after that he worked on building sites until they moved to Rayleigh in Essex and took over a sub post-office (Brockett's Stores, which someone on here remembered once!). Maternal grandfather was an Engine Driver on the GNER working out of Stratford (east London). All his in-laws and their parents and grandparents worked on the railway too. My 3 x gt grandfather is listed as an Engine Driver in 1861. Paternal grandmother didn't work, except in the sub post office. Her father was a master butcher, so she didn't 'need' to work. Maternal grandmother was a maid at first, then worked at a printer's checking foreign banknotes until her marriage in 1921. Maz. XX |
