I always wonder If people who wear fur would actually kill the animal, themselves? I doubt It,do you? I think all furriers should by law be made to show a video, Of what actually happens in fur farms from the pens their kept in to the slaughter,If you think they slaughter them in a humane way, think again. The usual way is electrocution through the anus, this stops the fur being damaged. Yes,fur is very popular In very cold climates, its still not a survival Issue though, its a vanity one! Dont they Have Thermal Undies in These cold Climates. Oh,Dear,I forgot,Who Would be seen dead In thermals!! Wear a dead Animal Instead!!!!

My friend, who is from Finland, is delighted by the current anti-fur campaign. This means she has picked up umpteen mink coats for a song. As she says - try living in Finland without a fur coat. She has never been 'abused' in this country for wearing one because most younger people haven't a clue what real fur looks like and assume it's a fake. OC

I have 2 fur coats in my wardrobe at home that were my greatgrans, they are about 80 years old - but I wouldn't wear them (apart from being far too small) as they would get ruined. I'd never buy a fur coat even though I like the feel on the old ones, just because we know now how to make very good fakes that look real so we don't need to butcher animals to get it. It's like ivory, you kill the animal for 1 little bit of the animal, it's unnecessary. I like the point about leather though - it's not in the small leage anymore as the animal are slaughtered for food, the hide is a by produce.

I have a huge problem with fur,Its vain and Not really needed,is it? I wear leather , to me there is a huge difference, leather is the by-product of meat,so therefore all the animal is used. when they skin a fox, mink e.t.c,its for one purpose only, to give someone the feeling of 'look what I can afford,I look so beautiful' when infact In my eyes it only makes them look ugly and vain. The Innuit people at one time killed to survive, and used every part of the animal, food, clothing and jewellery to sell to help their economy, even thats been tainted now,In Canada they exploit the trade In seal pelts for greedy fat westerners! Rant Over.

Peter, As a veggie, who also does not wear leather or fur (if you talk the talk....) I think people are perhaps more aware that fur is sometimes sourced from the wild or from countries where humane farming just does not happen. Though I would like to convert you all to being veggie etc, I'm a realist. all I would say is if you do have fur/eat meat/ wear leather etc...that you try to ensure it is raised and killed humanely. You may wear leather...because the animal is killed for food. Fur is from an animal which has been killed to make you feel and look good. Sorry, but I think it is wrong. I have worn a fur coat. I was 7 years old and my mothers aunt sent my sister and I fur a coat for that dreadful winter of 1947. I have also had a faux fur jacket. Christmas pressie from my OH...when I was slim enough to wear one. Today I would look like a *Woolie Mammoth* :-) Deanna X

I do the same, and I don't believe I'm cruel either. It is interesting though that there is this perception that fur must be bad and cruel. Why is this?

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 16 Mar 2007 17:55

Dragonfly has a point. There is an overwhelming opinion that it must be cruel? Why? Is it not just as cruel to kill chickens and turkeys by hanging them upside down and then electrocuting them?

At the risk of upsetting people I nearly bought a mink full length coat when I was in Norway a few years back. Not sure why I didn't, probably the baggage allowance on flight back. However, as I am not tall and slim, it probably wouldn't suit me. In fact when I was speaking to my dad about it his comment was that I would look like a Furby wearing it. So no I wouldn't but if I had the figure............I'd have one. T.O.R. ;o)) *runs from thread quickly*
