Rollo I am so pleased that your son is safe and well. We had a few agonising hours on Saturday waiting to hear news of our French students living in Paris, all of whom sent us messages to say they were safe. Even our students living in others areas of France contacted us. God bless you. God bless France.

Thank you for your kind thoughts inc those who sent us pm. They are appreciated.

Our kith and kin are ok I just wish I could say the same about all of our friends and their families a few of whom are burning candles of hope.

British polticians of all parties right now would do best to button up.

Paris is not just a geographical entity on a map. It is an idea, a dream, a place of hope and creation, a place of love, the incarnation of two thousand years, the city of lights. The outrage is an outrage against all humanity.

If the BBC et al are going to run long programs about the tragedy then they should at least get people with some idea of Paris life away from the 8 and XVI arondissements and the geography of the city, the very complicated relationship with the muslim community and of course a basic appreciation of near east politics.

I am gutted, our son is gutted, Paris is in a state of shock going through the motions of normal commercial life. Yet if you have planned or are thinking of a trip to Paris soon or the next few months then do go you will receive an extra special welcome. The £ is strong against the €uro take advantage!

<3 Rollo - the world is such a small place its not surprising that some people have friends of friends caught up in a tragedy. The worst is probably the 'Not Knowing' what has happened to the missing.

The media in general is skirting around the cultural clash, no doubt trying not to stir up further antagonisim. Perhaps when the hurt has subsided they will, but I doubt it. If they don't talk about it, it doesn't exist.

hi

Despite what you may hear from some and esp Marine le Pen relationships between all ethnic communites including muslims in eastern Paris is very good. Until Friday the biggest issue was ( as in London ) developers pushing out people who have lived in the city for generations in favour of yuppies and Chinese property speculators.

There is no such thing as a Greater Paris similar to Greater London. Paris ends with the bvd circulaire and the 20 arondissements. An old joke is that the 21st arond. is the Three Valleys (Tigne etc.)

Around Paris there are a series of independent urban authorities which all together comprise the Isle de France. Paris itself has had a socialiswt major for a long time partly due to the corruption of Chirac and partly because they try not to knock the place down to make a buck and sustain the trad. city life such as grants to old theatres and not allowing developers to shut down the street markets.

The urban units such as Val de Marne. Haute de Seines tend to be run by the UMP. They have some areas which are very affluent eg Hautes de Seines but are characterised by endless public housing projects. These are known as the "banlieu" and other less polite names.

Life in the banlieus is tough but not anywhere near as tough as in large scale public housing in east London or Manchester. A good chunk of the muslim population live in these places. So do other ethnicities.

You will hear all sorts of nonsense that the French hate the muslim population of the banlieus, that they cannot get a decent job , go to college and so on and that makes them ripe for conversion to jihadism.

That simply is not true. Yes, fiery imams regulary preach inflamatory sermons on Fridays and some radicals try to suppress such things as bars and women not wearing the habiya. By and large they are ignored and even laughed out. The proportion falling for the nonsense of hate and violence is tiny when you realise that there are 4.5 million muslims in France most of whom were born there.

That is why the latest outrage was for the most part conceived and carried out by people from outside the city.

Yes Barbra, we watched it too and did our very best to join in with the whole stadium to sing La Marseillaise before the minutes silence in respect of the people who were killed by the terrorists in Paris on Friday 13th November. You could hear a pin drop. Very very emotional indeed. A strong sense of solidarity and support for France.
