Please note Family Tree Maker 2014 is not compatible with Windows 10. We have tried both 11 and 12 and they do work on W10.

There could well be a great swathe of software titles and hardware (printers, scanners, cameras etc) which do not work with Win 10.

Likewise, you may run into problems with some drivers if they haven't been updated for yonks.

On the other hand, behind the scenes Win 10 is very similar to Win 7 and 8 so in theory a lot of software should still work.

However, they all differed greatly from the dinosaur XP (you really shouldn't be running this any longer but you won't get the free upgrade anyway) so you may run into issues when trying to run software written for XP.

The good news is that in Win 10 you can still run programmes in Compatibility Mode which should solve at least a large proportion of problems.

If you need help in running in Compatibiliy Mode give me a shout.

It should work perfectly well but for some very poor programming from Ay in not updating how they read the user agent string. This info tells the server what browser and version is in use.

Here is Microsoft doc.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh869301%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

And here is how to fix it:

or just use chrome, firefox

I just read this article........

:-(

They'd be bored reading my emails....... but I wouldn't want a computer to remember my credit card details etc.

It took just under 2 hours to fully upgrade my win 7 this morning. I use Chrome anyway but I quite like the new start menu & am discovering other bits gradually. Not so happy that I've lost my apps, calendar/clock desktop themes from my desktop though. Still only a minor flaw which I can live with :-)

LadyScozz - a computer will always remember your details (credit card and other) unless you change settings not to.

And even then it will, in all reality.

Taking us over 12 hrs each time to upgrade. Only my laptop left. " PCs and 1 laptop done. Perhaps an evening - night time download for me.

Before Errol and Rollo try to tell me how to make it faster OH was in electronics all his working life and on computers hard and software from 1981. It's how it is out here, we don't have fibre optics and our broadband is not very fast and can be very temperamental. We sometimes have local links but nothing off the island.

In common use for everything here siga, siga (slowly, slowly) manjana is far too fast for here. :-D

We downloaded Windows 10 last Friday, it took about an hour.

It also downloaded a few bits we did not need, so we deleted those.

Seems fine so far, quicker we think too.

OH's tablet and our main desktop are both 8.1 bought recently.

OH got his windows 10 update a few days ago - it took about 2 hours and he quite likes it. FTM 2005 is working fine and so far he has found no problems.

Still waiting for the update to our main computer.

My laptop realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly wants me to upgrade to windows 10. It is going to wear me down. (a little blue box keeps appearing) I liked XP, it was simple and I could make it work. Then I got a new computer with Windows 7 on. Ok a little more tricky for me but alright. None of the programs I liked/used were compatible, but after a while I stopped crying and moved on. Then I got a laptop with Win. 8.1 arggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and now they want me to have Win. 10 for free no less. :-|

I've got two desktops still running XP which I've found easy to use and reliable.
My laptop has been upgraded to Widows 8.1 which is less intuative, slow and seems unstable, loses the wireless connection.
The idea was to get used to 8.1 on the laptop before upgrading the desktops. So far I haven't for the reasons above.
My daughter's laptop is running Vista which, whilst it seems reliable, once again doesn't sttike as being particularly user-friendly.
I really don't know where to go next!

It's my turn now to have the POP UP BLUE BOX!

Question is.... do I press the reserve button?!!
The Windows 10 box says "I'm good to go!" and it's "APPS: 0 Incompatible"

I have Windows 7 on a Dell Studio Laptop.
Apart from a dodgy external mouse, it's simple and easy to use.
I have all my Family History documents and photos, including photos and videos from my Nikon Camera Uploads, stored in it.

Can some of you tell a technological ignoramus come technophobe ..... in SIMPLE ENGLISH the fores and againsts of downloading Windows 10?

I nearly pressed the button!

BUT I SHALL WAIT A WHILE LONGER! :-D :-D :-D

Kate

Kate Report 15 Aug 2015 18:57

yes click the blue box and reserve, it will download in the background then when its ready to upgrade the blue box will appear and tell you to upgrade.... it could take a few days that's what happened with me....

only thing my printer wouldn't work so i had to re-install the driver for that....

good luck :-) x

FOR you can boast about having the latest version of Windows.

AGAINST you are being used as a guinea pig - MS is using home users as a test bed to iron out any problems before unleashing its power on business users.
You cannot roll back to your previous version of windows if, after a month, you decide you do not like it.
Updates are automatic - even unwanted or potentially damaging ones. MS will dictate what it puts on your machine and when. This will also affect users who are on a capped internet connection or use mobile broadband (this is also important to bear in mind if dowloading in the background prior to innstallation).
It is always advisable to wait before installing a new operating system to allow time for serious flaws and bugs to become apparent.

If you are eligible for the upgrade, you can wait a year before downloading/installing so give other mugs, I mean guinea pigs, I mean "experts" the task of installing and discovering the numerous problems, crashes, incompatibilities etc on your behalf.
