My laptop realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly wants me to upgrade to windows 10. It is going to wear me down. (a little blue box keeps appearing) I liked XP, it was simple and I could make it work. Then I got a new computer with Windows 7 on. Ok a little more tricky for me but alright. None of the programs I liked/used were compatible, but after a while I stopped crying and moved on. Then I got a laptop with Win. 8.1 arggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and now they want me to have Win. 10 for free no less. :-|

OH's tablet and our main desktop are both 8.1 bought recently.

OH got his windows 10 update a few days ago - it took about 2 hours and he quite likes it. FTM 2005 is working fine and so far he has found no problems.

Still waiting for the update to our main computer.

We downloaded Windows 10 last Friday, it took about an hour.

It also downloaded a few bits we did not need, so we deleted those.

Seems fine so far, quicker we think too.

Taking us over 12 hrs each time to upgrade. Only my laptop left. " PCs and 1 laptop done. Perhaps an evening - night time download for me.

Before Errol and Rollo try to tell me how to make it faster OH was in electronics all his working life and on computers hard and software from 1981. It's how it is out here, we don't have fibre optics and our broadband is not very fast and can be very temperamental. We sometimes have local links but nothing off the island.

In common use for everything here siga, siga (slowly, slowly) manjana is far too fast for here. :-D

LadyScozz - a computer will always remember your details (credit card and other) unless you change settings not to.

And even then it will, in all reality.

It took just under 2 hours to fully upgrade my win 7 this morning. I use Chrome anyway but I quite like the new start menu & am discovering other bits gradually. Not so happy that I've lost my apps, calendar/clock desktop themes from my desktop though. Still only a minor flaw which I can live with :-)

I just read this article........

:-(

They'd be bored reading my emails....... but I wouldn't want a computer to remember my credit card details etc.

It should work perfectly well but for some very poor programming from Ay in not updating how they read the user agent string. This info tells the server what browser and version is in use.

Here is Microsoft doc.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh869301%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

And here is how to fix it:
http://winaero.com/blog/change-the-user-agent-in-internet-explorer-12/

or just use chrome, firefox

There could well be a great swathe of software titles and hardware (printers, scanners, cameras etc) which do not work with Win 10.

Likewise, you may run into problems with some drivers if they haven't been updated for yonks.

On the other hand, behind the scenes Win 10 is very similar to Win 7 and 8 so in theory a lot of software should still work.

However, they all differed greatly from the dinosaur XP (you really shouldn't be running this any longer but you won't get the free upgrade anyway) so you may run into issues when trying to run software written for XP.

The good news is that in Win 10 you can still run programmes in Compatibility Mode which should solve at least a large proportion of problems.

If you need help in running in Compatibiliy Mode give me a shout.

Please note Family Tree Maker 2014 is not compatible with Windows 10. We have tried both 11 and 12 and they do work on W10.

OH! :-(

I've no idea what much of any of that meant, but it didn't sound good!

As I am an ignoramus when it comes to technology, it has not encouraged me to press that button!

A pop up appeared twice today as well. Telling me to reserve Windows 10 before it's too late! :-S :-S :-S

Do I risk it?

Or stay with what I know?

"I do wonder if getting everyone on the same platform (which makes sense in principle) is a start towards making windows a subscription service as is the case with some of the products like 365 they now market."
(Mayfield)

yes, of course it is. Office has already moved to a subscription basis.
Microsoft have pulled out of a steep dive realising that their old biz model of selling gadzillions of units with all the cost overheads, piracy problems etc was no longer viable. SOHO and biz users with ancient versions of Windows. SQL server, office are quite content to bumble along. In the end a cash crisis would happen. OTOH a service based model (eg Azure) avoids having to cajole users into updating as they will get the updates like it or not. Big biz users & govt hate forking out sheds of cash up front and will be far more comfortable shelling out from their income stream. Other wins for M$ will be one version on all platforms (*), makes piracy a whole lot more difficult and above all shuts out the Dread Mr Linux on OEM boxes through the use of EUFI.(*2)

There are installations of Windows10 supporting touch screens as large as 50in. No, my arms are not that long either ... but touch is the way MS want you to go. So now is the time to found a screen cleaning startup not needing much manual intervention. Or maybe office workers will be banned from Subway etc.

(*) this is more fantasy than reality as smart phones are not really up to running core code written in high level languages. Meanwhile MS are selling their phones v cheap - even then there are few takers. Getting updates to previous incarnations of Windows Mobile could only be done unofficially.

(*2) EUFI bios allows total lockout of a second OS being installed eg linux. It is the OEM who chooses to have this option not the end user. Of course large end users can stamp their feet e.g. German govt. but UKGov sees it as a "good thing" 'cos it makes life easier for MI6.

So, pretty as it is, useful in some ways another moniker for Windows10 might be "the Empire Strikes Back".

Make sure yr young ones have a Raspberry Pi and discourage them from any kind of Windows. Luke Skywalker says you know it makes sense...

Microsoft have said that updates will be free for the lifetime of the machine the system is installed on.

The key thing here is "lifetime" - that can mean many different things.

But, basically I agree with you Mayfield.

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 4 Aug 2015 22:30

Yes eRRolSheep no one will want to pay, but they could get sneaky, force another update (now automatic) on and start charging for updates.

Maybe I am just an old cynic but the thought has crossed my mind so I don't doubt they have considered it! ;-)

That said I have had no problems (fingers crossed :-D) I had no issues with 8.1 and from an operational view point I am pleased with 10.

There seems to be a problem with google chrome not working, just timing out. Mine worked at first, but won't now. I also run googLe chrome Canary and that works fine, so hopefully they will have the fix for the normal chrome soon
