I'm looking in as I used to play in a jazz band at the Cavern and Rory Storm and the hurricanes were one of our supporting groups.i have a programme of a jazz festival Jan 1960, and we are featured with a picture and Rory storm are just named on the last page with Ringo the last name.
It's not a really true picture of how the Cavern was .
One place looked like the Iron Door Club, but that was up stairs in a warehouse.
Wish I'd had all their autographs as spent a lot of time in the little band room to the left of stage.

Memories!!

Mersey,if you go to Mathew st and look up at the bricks of the bands, you will see quite near the top,the name "The Collegians". I was one of them.
Done loads of all nighters there and had a few naps in the Transit van parked ,as you could then,in the street.
The cavern now is further up the street than the original ..
We used to go the The Grapes for a drink when the supporting bands came on.
Coca cola only in Cavern 8d a glass!

Mauatthecoast Report 15 Sep 2014 22:24

I enjoyed it Mersey and wasn't disappointed. There's always 'bad dialect' from actors who aren't from the area...think Brenda Blethyn's Vera :-S...but I'm loving the music (my era lol)

Brenda you must have so many good memories, I've never been to Liverpool so must go one day.

edit: I've got to say we girls never wore denim jeans in the 1960s, it was the lads who came off the navy ships who wore them. We went out with boys who wore Italian suits *swoon*
;-)

Mersey Report 15 Sep 2014 22:27

HID and his dad worked at BICC he said he heard rumors that she worked there, but never knew whether it was true or not

Mersey,
I went to the University hospital to see a specialist about 12 years ago as I had a mole that had to be looked at at the back of my eye,and I said we would go on to see how Mathew street is....but I had my eyes dilated and couldn't see the brick, but my Oh saw it.
I would love a pic of it sometime, but don't want to put you out
I have the picture on line of me and the band that was published in the programme. When we were there we went into the memorabilia shop just up from the cavern and they knew every date and knew the programme and said it was worth about £300.
I was amazed at the record of almost everyone who played there and even the River boat shuffles we played on..cos you know it opened as a jazz club and we played many times with Acker Bilk,Kenny Ball, etc

Ray McFall who started the Cavern bought the piano especially for me as Most of the jazz bands then didn't use a piano,so sometimes if I see a picture of the original place,I look at the piano and think it was originally for me!,

Claim to fame!
I lived in Manchester then and we used to come up the East Lancs rd
