I have noticed quite a few references recently on here to the fact that some news threads disappear in a downwards direction on the General board on a regular basis.
One person seemed to express concern that other threads - often of a light hearted nature - seemed to appear at the top of the board with great regularity.

I have done a great deal of research into this strange phenomenon and, having made various observations, have discovered something earth shatteringly amazing.

The threads at the top (we call these "popular threads") have lots of new posts.

The new threads at the bottom (we call these "unpopular threads") have very few, if any, posts.

Maybe, just maybe, certain threads plummet to the depths of "Never Never Read" land because PEOPLE ARE NOT INTERESTED.

Might I suggest that if people wish to read about the finer points of certain topics they join a website that actually caters for such things.

I recommend the very good "www . ohh it's a tragedy but I want to read more and more about it and make preposterous generalisations along with likeminded people dot com"

:-D :-D :-D Errol. Sharp as ever ;-)

That must account then for the thread I posted about the sad death of another Aussie soldier in Afghanistan. Three replies. I deleted it due to lack of interest :-(

May he rest in peace Sue. I did not see this thread much to
my shame.

lol Errol

There's enough doom & gloom (where have I heard that before?) to be seen on tv & newspapers etc.

Most of us come here for some light relief. I know I do.

:-D

SueMaid ~ I saw your post, but couldn't add to it. I would get too emotional. A young friend of ours is in Afghanistan. We've known him since he was 6 years old. He should be back in Oz by Christmas.

SueMaid - an absolute tragedy.
I think it is important to be aware of things like that.

There is room for all topics, I also come on for the laughs
(all to few these days imo) Death of a soldier not doom and
gloom to me we need to know about these brave men and women
who gave their lives for us all. God Bless them.

You forgot to mention slag-each-other-off.com (otherwise known as facebook) ;-)

It's not for anyone to say what topics can and can't be raised (providing they don't break the T&C). One person's 'doom and gloom' is another's avid interest, one person's light-hearted thread is another's inane drivel. As Emma says, room for all.

...and if a thread plummets down the board like a boulder then just maybe it is because nobody is interested.

Errol - quote

The threads at the top (we call these "popular threads") have lots of new posts.

The new threads at the bottom (we call these "unpopular threads") have very few, if any, posts.

May I ask who the 'we' are. :-S ?

Or Errol it doesn't get a chance for threads that are
being kept at the top which annoy so many people
but keep being added to.

Absolutely spot on, Graham

Joeva - "we" are the researchers lol

GoldenGirl - they are popular. That is why they remain at the top.

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 24 Jun 2013 13:27

So that is why they get reported because they are popular.
Lost me there Errol.

went on facebook once - forgot my password - never been on it since and from what I've heard about it, I have no desire to go on there

I love the funny threads more than anything - the dry wit of some of our members is hysterical - I do like a good laugh

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 24 Jun 2013 13:40

GoldenGirl - things do not get reported because they are popular. Things get reported because they are deemed to be offensive.

At the end of the day, if something continues to appear at the top of a board, then it is, in all likelihood, because it is popular. Popular doesn't necessarily mean that people like it. It just means that it is a topic about which people have a lot to add, thus making it popular.
If a thread soars screaming down the board then that is most likely because nobody has added to it. It is unpopular.

careful what you post............beware the phantom RR'r

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 24 Jun 2013 13:50

Or the OP and friends are unpopular no matter the subject
and are reported and then OP and their friends follow those
who think have reported them on to their threads and report
them and cause havoc and so it goes on.

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 24 Jun 2013 13:56

Well that would be a shame Bob as this is the best
debate I've had in ages.
