Not a musical, but a film I always remember was 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' - just found it fascinating.

Ann in C - 2 questions:
A. The name of the cinema that used to be in Old Church Road (my saturday matinee cinema!), and
B. the one opposite Caroline St in Cardiff - was it the Prince of Wales (mucky coat brigade cinema :-D) ?

Inn of Sixth Happiness. Think it was around 1954/5 Remember seeing the set of that in Beddgelert...and the paddy fields near Portmeirion.

Inn of Sixth Happiness Brenda........1958 was the story of Gladys Alyward (Ingrid Bergman)

I've personal reasons for remembering this film, a real tearjerker.

And Ann how could we forget 'Oliver' 1968 ..... fantasic music and lyrics :-D

The Tivoli was Llandaff where the car park is by the cathedral

Yes Mau I was a bit wrong with the date,but that was the date it was released.There was a lot of preparation in Wales to build the sets before the actual filming.
I do know that there were a lot of local people used as extras.
I wasn't living in Wales then,but my in laws did and FIL was very interested and kept going to see the progress in the various locations.
It must have been later than I said....probably 1957 !

No Mau I didn't think you were correcting me...I just looked it up to check as I knew it was before my daughter was born in 1958 as we'd had a trip to Wales and my f.iL took us to see.....Must say the Dovey estuary and Beddgelert looked very realistic and it brought a lot of visitors to the area.
Wouldn't mind seeing the film again. X

Oh Mau how could we all forget Oliver, loved that film and the lad that played Oliver was, at one time, a chiropracter or Osteopath in Cheltenham.

I used to love the musical films in the 50's which had an underwater dance sequence; I thought that was really magical. Can't remember what any of them were called. Anybody know?

Was it Esther Williams who did the swimming sequence films?

Esther Williams was in: Neptune's Daughter (1949) with Gene Kelly in Take Me Out to the Ballgame (1949). Jupiter's Darling (1955).).

Are these the ones you mean?

I was a bit young for the other two, but I probably saw Jupiter's Darling, it was around the right time.
