It is always good to hear from you Kandj; just post when you are able. I am so sorry that your hubby is still so unwell. Stay strong. Your OH and you are being held in our thoughts <3

Lovely verses all week Cynthia. Thoughts today for all who have suffered and are still suffering in world wide conflicts, including my son's new wife whose first husband, an American, was killed in Saudi Arabia thirteen years ago.

Hello all

A lovely poem Cynthia and so fitting for today 11th day of the 11th month.

How tragic Vera for your friend to lose her husband in hospital so unexpectedly.
Joining in with Cynthia and Emma and praying they all will find the strength to cope.

We are still working through hubbies pain-filled days and broken nights and praying
things will get better. Waiting now for a call back from the surgery about pain relief.
I still have no immediate plans to post here daily but thank you all for your support. xx

Good morning :-)

Your poor friend Vera....she must be so shocked. It is going to take her a while to come to terms with all the facts and I guess there will be lots of emotions going round in her mind. I will hold her and her family in prayer. <3

We Shall Keep the Faith
Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.
We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valour led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.
And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honour of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

Today I heard about an acquaintance who has lost her husband very suddenly and unexpectedly. She took her husband to the hospital for a fairly routine operation, expecting to see him the next day, but sadly he died during the operation. Please remember his wife, his sister and family in your prayers tonight.

My thoughts are with them and everyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, especially if they feel they didn't get a chance to say goodbye.

As we saw with the Scouts on Tuesday, the Girl Guides too, were involved in war work in both World Wars. They carried important messages and helped deliver milk and also par-celled up clothing to be sent to soldiers at the Front. Guides learned first aid so they could help with injuries.

In WW2 Guides were earning badges as proficient electricians, mechanics, first-aiders, and signallers. The telegraphist badge required them to construct their own wireless receiver and send messages in Morse code at a speed of 30 letters per minute.

Guides knitted socks for soldiers and helped in the national campaign to "dig for victory". And refugees and evacuees were as-signed to Guide companies.

This training meant they had basic skills in many fields, which could be put to good use in the country's moment of need.

Whilst the Scouts have kept a reference to God in their promise, the Guides dropped this a few years ago.

Lord, you are sovereign over the nations, and so we pray for the United States whose motto is 'In God we trust'.

As they wait to hear confirmation of their new President, we pray ..

Lord, may there be liberty
Lord, may there be hope
Lord, may there be love
Lord, may there be grace
Lord, may there be peace
We pray, Lord, above all that you will reign. Amen.

Continuing our theme for Remembrance week....

I do not know your name-
Nor for which battle you died.
I do not know your name,
Nor the tears that were cried.
I do not know where you rest-
Nor the promises broken.
I do not know your uniform
And you're fears,
They lay unspoken.
But, I know your spirit exists-
That your courage is admired,
And your sacrifice is honoured
By each soul that is inspired.
And,
I offer you from my heart
Thank you;
To guardians unknown,
For offering yourselves for us all
That we may keep freedom...
Our home.

I am not happy with the weather forecast that we may be getting some of the dreaded white stuff....... :-(

Had a lovely visit from an old friend yesterday so we caught up on the latest news :-D

Continuing to look at various aspects of war this remembrance week.....

Children were encouraged to play their part during WW1. The Boy Scouts' Association was one of the first youth organisations to provide practical assistance to the British war effort. They were put to guarding railway bridges and tracks in Britain. Scouts also guarded telephone and telegraph lines, railway stations, water reservoirs or any location that might be militarily important. From late 1917 many Scouts assisted with air raid duties, including sounding the all-clear signal after an attack. Some Scouts were even trained in fire fighting. The Scout movement's hand-book, published before the war broke out, instructed all Scouts to 'be prepared…to die for your country if need be'.

During this coming week, leading up to Remembrance Sunday, we will be looking at poems, quotes and stories connected to that special day..

Poppy Poppy

Poppy, Poppy, what do you say?
Wear me on Remembrance Day.
Poppy, Poppy, what do you tell?
Many soldiers in battle fell.
Poppy, Poppy, what should we know?
That peace on earth should grow, grow, grow.

The Collect (special prayer) for today :

Almighty Father,
whose will is to restore all things
in your beloved Son, the King of all:
govern the hearts and minds of those in authority,
and bring the families of the nations,
divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin,
to be subject to his just and gentle rule;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

The Gospel is taken from Luke and tells Jesus’ story of resurrection and re-marriage.

Good morning :-)

Travelling back from lunches at church yesterday, we saw a beautiful rainbow.......and when I see a rainbow I am always reminded of the children's hymn.....sung to the tune of Clementine...

God almighty set a rainbow
arching in the sky above,
and his people understand it
as a signal of his love.

Chorus : Thank you, Father, thank you, Father,
thank you, Father, for your care,
for your warm and loving kindness
to your people ev’rywhere.

Clouds will gather, storm come streaming
on the darkened earth below –
too much sunshine makes a desert,
without rain no seed can grow.
Chorus:

Through the stormcloud shines your rainbow,
through the dark earth springs the wheat.
In the future waits your harvest
and the food for all to eat.
Chorus:

God almighty, you have promised
after rain the sun will show;
bless the seeds and bless the harvest.
Give us grace to help us grow.

I haven't heard 'Shine Jesus shine' for a while either Vera..........I wonder if you will be thinking of it for a third day? :-D

A Prayer on Friday

Lord, here I am.
It’s another day – Friday.
For some people it’s the end of their working week.
The weekend break is ahead.
Time, maybe, for the family, the garden, sport, odd jobs.
So today Lord, I pray for families,
For parents and children.
I ask your blessing and peace
To be with every family.
Hold them together with a great love for each other.
Amen

“Love is patient, love is kind.”
1 Corinthians 13:4

I hope you have a better day today Cynthia.

I have had the hymn Shine, Jesus, Shine going round and round my brain for the last two days. I don't know why, I am not aware of hearing it sung, or even mentioned, recently. It is one of the more modern hymns that I like but not non-stop for two days!

Thinking of Kandj and her OH and all in need of strength and support right now.

Good morning :-)

I had 'one of those days' yesterday.........so I am hoping that today is more settled...sigh.

Having thought about the dear departed over the last few days, I thought this hymn fitted in well with the sentiments and cheer our souls

1.Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.

2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
(Refrain)

3. Perfect submission, all is at rest;
I in my Saviour am happy and blest,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.
(Refrain)

Had a lovely day with our grandson yesterday. He came over to paint the garage door and clean the car for us bless him. He did an amazing job and it was a pleasure to feed and water him too :-D

All Souls Day is a time when we particularly remember those who have died. The prayers appointed for that day remind us that we are joined with the Communion of Saints, that great group of Christians who have finished their earthly life and with who we share the hope of resurrection from the dead.

Merciful Father,
hear our prayer
and console us.
As we renew
our faith in Your Son,
whom You raised from the dead,
strengthen our hope
that all our departed brothers and sisters
will share in His resurrection,
who lives and reigns
with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Dermot Report 31 Oct 2016 09:27

(From ‘The Times’ a few days ago.) For the first time in nearly 500 years, scientists have opened the tomb in which Jesus’s body was thought to have been laid after his crucifixion.

Builders closed the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Wednesday evening and lifted the marble slab covering the tomb, which had been in place since 1555.

By Thursday evening they had unearthed a second piece of marble, etched with a cross, probably dating back to the 12th century.

Beneath that, they believe, is the rock on which Jesus was placed after his death. Nothing of Jesus’s remains or materials are believed to be in the tomb‘.

(One frustrated reader’s letter in today’s edition added: “Surely it would have been more accurate to say: ‘It is believed by Christians that no remains of Jesus exist - and certainly not in the tomb’.)
