That's not an easy question David and any answer will depend on whether you think the Bible should be taken literally. I find it difficult to take literally. You have to remember that when most people were unable to read or write stories were handed down by word of mouth and those stories were often meant to illustrate a particular point rather than be taken as something that literally happened. Also, as has been said before, the books of the Bible have been through so many languages and so many translations that any reading of them needs to be treated with care.

I am not sure of the lifespan of the average poor worker in biblical times but I doubt if it was more than about 40 years, so even 3 score years and 10 would have been amazing. Tales of men living hundreds of years are, I think, not to be taken literally but to be read in the context of what the rest of the story is telling you.

It makes no sense to me for the Bible to be just for one particular people in one corner of the world at one particular time. If the Bible is the Word of God, then it has to be the Word of God for all peoples in all times so must be capable of being interpreted by man according to his knowledge at the time.

I am sorry if this all sounds rather confused. I am not always very good at putting my feelings into words. I also apologise if my thoughts have upset or offended anyone.

Hello and good morning to you all <3

This question may have been addressed before but it's worth asking.

If our life span is between 70 - 80 yearswith the medicines at our disposal and our diet

is better (?) than it once was, Did people in the OT live hundreds of years ?

I am still enjoying the calendar Cynthia. I like the theme of Hope. Have you found the chocs yet Emma? Save me the Turkish Delight one please :-D

We had the funeral today of the third local lady that has recently died. It was at the local church with the same vicar as last time. It was a superb service again; this man really does have just the right touch and I got to wondering what it is that makes him so good. I realised the 3 best priests I have ever come across all came to the priesthood later in life and I think their experience of life outside the church has given them an extra edge. Would you agree?

Hello all

I'm liking your Advent Calendar theme for this month Cynthia. Thank you.

There was just one Baptism in church on Sunday and our Rector asked the 4 year old sister of the baby to come and light the first Advent Candle. She was so excited.

The first candle is coloured purple and symbolizes "Hope." It's sometimes referred to as the Prophecy Candle in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah who foretold the birth of Christ.

Wrap up and keep warm everyone during the cold weather.

It's certainly a bit nippy this morning. I hope the Advent calendar is accessible - if you would prefer the prayer here on the page instead, please let me know.

Good morning :-)

It was only last night that I realised I hadn't popped in yesterday....apologies!

Yesterday was Advent Sunday and, with that in mind, we think of Advent Calendars. Advent is the 4 week period before Christmas - the birth of Christ. Many churches have an Advent wreath consisting of 5 candles. One candle is lit on each Sunday leading up to Christmas Day and then the 5th candle is lit.

I have been stretching my meagre brains to their limit and hope I have created something different ….I am using it on my church's FB page and thought I would share it here too...….

Good morning :-)

We have been looking at bedtime prayers, but obviously, we can pray any time of the day. Having a set time where we teach our children to pray may help instil in them a lifetime habit of talking with the Lord.

Forgive, O Lord, for Thy dear Son
The ill that I this day have done.
That with the world, myself, and Thee
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Good morning :-)

I'm pleased you like these simple prayers......they are good for adults too aren't they?

The benefits of bedtime prayers for children.

Praying every day builds discipline in kids, especially as their faith begins to grow each day. Maintaining a routine each day helps keep kids disciplined. Praying can have a great effect on children, especially if parents are having a hard time disciplining them. Prayer discipline is good for adults too!

“Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me:
Bless Thy little child tonight;
Through the darkness be Thou near me,
Keep me safe till morning light.
All this day Thy hand has led me,
And I thank Thee for Thy care;
Thou hast warmed me, clothed me, fed me;
Listen to my evening prayer.
