Hi Everyone.
Thankyou so much for all your kind comments.
Really good news today..
Mum is doing really really well and has been off the ventilator for a few days. Today she has had a smaller trachy tube inserted which has given her voice back and also had her catheter removed. She has been discharged from ITU so just waiting for a bed to come available on a general ward.

Thankyou so much.

Hi All.
Mum is getting a little stronger day by day. She is still on the ventilator. They did take her off it for a little while yesterday but she was struggling a bit so put her back on it.
Thankyou Chris i will take a look at some of the threads when i get 5 minutes. My Mum is 70 and is a smoker but i would not say a heavy smoker. She has always been quite active and on the go.

Puss..
The hospital were pleased with hubby's progress on Tuesday. He is no longer vomiting and has even put on a little weight which he is not too pleased about. Hopefully now he has turned the corner and will continue to improve.

Alyson there have been several threads on this disease/asthma over years.

Have COPD. Do not know what age your Mum is but nurse told me many years ago that people of around my age who had childhood asthma - their lungs were badly damaged due to the fact there was no medication available in 40's and 50s.

COPD is used as an umbrella term for chronic asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and any related breathing complaint caused by any number of factors.

I spent 9 weeks in ICU in 2009 due to respiratory failure and I am still here!

If you wish to mail me please do so - will help if I can. I just put COPD in on search at top of page and lots of threads - with info - may be of use to you.

Hi Everyone.
Mum is getting a little stronger. She is still on the ventilator but no longer sedated. They are turning the ventilator down little by little to encourage her to breath on her own. It was turned down to 35% yesterday but had to be put back up to 40% overnight because she was struggling a bit.
They are putting her condition down to COPD. She has had no signs of a bad chest or breathing problems yet the doctor is saying how bad her chest is.
Has anyone else had experience with this condition.

Such a worry for you all but hope things go better when the doctors try again to get your Mum breathing on her own. At least she is in the right place to be well cared for and watched over, so try and get some rest yourself while you can

Hello all.
Thankyou for your kind words.

The doctors decided to lift the sedation on my Mum today and she was responding well with nods and smiles. When the doctor came back this afternoon he decided to take her off the ventilator. She did not cope breathing on her own so had to put her straight back on it and re sedate her. They will try again in a few days time. Soooo we are back to where we were on Sunday.

Thankyou.

Thankyou all for your kind wishes, thoughts, prayers and hugs.

Mum is stable but still on the ventilator. The doctors have ruled out pneumonia but still waiting for some test results to come back. They are giving her antibiotics and fluids along with a few other things.
The doctors are hoping tomorrow to be able to lift the sedation and take her off the ventilator to see how she responds.

Once again Thankyou.
